Based on suprisingly good EA results, my daughter decided to apply to two LAC's which her counsellor told her were "reach" schools that were, well, a reach for her based on her stats, etc. I've always believed that she had legitimate shots at both schools, and encouraged her to go ahead and apply to both RD, which she has now done.
I have been told by friends that there is no value in a post application interview and visit. My daughter visited one of the schools, but did not interview. She did not even visit the other.
Any truth to my friend's idea that she should not bother to visit or interview now, even if both are done by the end of January?
Thanks.

About visits and interviews after the application has been sent: Your friend is a bit off-base. Keep in mind that college admissions committees are looking for reasons to admit students right up until the final decision is made. At some schools, especially public institutions, interviews and visits don't count in admissions at all. However, many private colleges and universities actually continue to conduct interviews after applications have been sent. In some cases, the interviews are done locally through alumni, but in others, the admissions officers will still meet with students on campus for interviews. Additionally, visits can be a way to show demonstrated interest, which can be important at some schools especially LACs and especially if they are something of a reach.
So, while a post-application interview or visit at SOME schools won't matter, at many schools they can make a difference right up until the decision is made. Since each school is unique, the best bet is to have your daughter email the admissions offices of the schools and ask them directly about whether an interview now can be done, and considered.
Good luck to your daughter!

That was certainly my sense of things before my friend suggested otherwise. The two school are LAC's, and we'll proceed as we originally planned...to go visit and interview to express very strong interest in the schools.
Thank you.

One of my d's LACs didn't even offer interviews until after application! Another "strongly suggested" interviews if the student sought any merit scholarships (this one didn't require additional scholarship applications). And my d and several others I know of felt that the interview gave them another viewpoint of the school.
As far as visits are concerned, I think that the more times a kid can see a school "up close and personal", the better. Whether the school cares or not is a different story; I think it's important for the student, if you can swing it.
Oh, and please remember to scoot on over to the Admissions thread and let us all cheer your daughter's EA results!

slewnior, my son didn't visit or interview at his current school until after he was accepted. He was also accepted at both Oberlin and UMich without visits or interviews.
This isn't to recommend this method, just to say that you shouldn't count out a school until the fat lady sings!

My S postponed applying to all but one additional school until he heard from his SCEA school in December. That, plus distance, meant that he hasn't had an interview at most of his schools. Several of them don't offer interviews at all. Several others only offer alumni interviews, and he has contacted all of those to ask for one. Some schools seem to be very efficient about setting up alumni interviews. Others are not. Given our location, it seems to be the case with most of his schools that if you hadn't firmly decided to apply by September or early October at the latest, you would be out of luck on the travelling-adcom interviews. Given that their deadlines aren't until January, and given the whole EA/ED scene, this seems rather unrealistic if they want to interview a wide pool of highly-qualified applicants. That leads me to suspect that they don't place a whole lot of emphasis on interviews.
Back when I applied to college, I had an actual interview at the school with an adcom at all but one school. That seems to be a rarity now. As things stand, my S will not have had an actual interview with an adcom at ANY school....unless the U of Chicago answers his email about an interview and we fly him out there for one, which we are willing to do, thanks to FF miles....if they would only get back to us.
