Furman Trip Report Notes from DW and S Trip to Furman:
General Impressions/Look of Campus:
Pretty, but very car oriented. Seems big for college that size. Nice lake. Campus is off away from any commercial areas. Academics and “feel” were impressive. Furman has a reputation of a pretty conservative and religious student body – didn’t get enough of a feel for this to either agree or disagree.
Overall Pros:
Everyone was very friendly, lots of fountains, lots of traditions, very school spirited, Greenville is a beautiful city, lots of organizations, freshman orientation week at beginning of year
Overall Cons:
Limited dining options, not much in walking distance of campus,
Dorms:
Fine, freshman are together in dorms, free laundry Some suites, some hall style and some apartments for upperclassmen. Most people live on campus
Dining Options:
Fairly limited as far as different locations, dining hall seemed nice. Usual variety of foods, etc.
Surrounding Community:
Greenville is a nice city with a lot to do, however, it is a car ride away, nothing in the immediate area.
Classroom Buildings:
Fine, some are under renovation and they are building a new science building. Beautiful library, newly renovated. Some classrooms are wireless, and some aren’t yet. The libray is wireless.
Impressions of Students/Friendliness:
Seemed very friendly, lots of offers of e-mail addresses, etc. Greek life is big, no getting around it – but not overwhelming. Tour guide was an Independent. Athletics are big, football in particular
Interesting Tidbits from Info Session:
Lots of different campus traditions, running fountains, etc. Study abroad very big. Furman is switching to a 2 semester year with a “Maymester”, from the trimester calendar they are currently on. Furman has an interesting Early Decision program. They call it ED, but it’s not binding until a deposit is made. Deposit is due Jan. 15, which is 30 days after the ED decisions are mailed. More like EA than ED, but the decision to commit must be made before the May 1 date that most EA programs use. Because of the non-binding nature, a person could apply for Furman “ED” as well as other schools EA or rolling and have a number of options to choose from come Jan. 15. Interesting.

Just got back from Furman. Here's some general comments, random disorganized comments, and some reponses to Lderochi's post.
Definitely beautiful campus. It was a crisp, cool day today, and several folks commented on how "bad" the weather was. (We thought it was a gorgeous fall day.) The lake is apparently only to look at - feeding the birds has increased the population to the point that it has made the lake unsuitable for swimming or boating. While we were there, a science class passed by with lots of buckets and equipment - they were going to test the waters.
We ate in the cafeteria. D liked it. They had a large salad bar, several hot food bars - pizza, pasta bar, roast pork, fried fish. Freshmen all get an anytime pass. Upper classmen can buy varying number of visits. Once you're in the door, it's all you can eat. We ate free, thanks to tickets from the Welcome center. (No one told us when we checked in. Fortunately, when I asked for directions to the cafeteria, someone asked if we had gotten our tickets.)
We were happy to see bicycles all over campus. This year the focus is on environmental awareness.
That said, 80% of students have cars. We asked several people who didn't think it was a problem to not have a car, since so many others do and can always give you a ride. There is also a shuttle that goes into town on Th, Fr, and Sa. This was always said as if repeating a rumor; no one seemed to have first-hand knowledge of it.
Students were getting ready for Homecoming activities happening throughout the week. We also saw plenty of folks working in the library. Didn't see a lot of "fun" while we were there - no frisbees, no one using the volleyball or tennis courts. But it's a school day.
Our guide says they're still working at making the whole campus wireless - not yet there in dorms.
D sat in on a music theory class - about 15 students. She said they all interacted, seemed involved in class. Two students were having birthdays, so a pianist in the class treated them all to a greatly embellished version of Happy Birthday.
Furman's majors have different numbers of credits required, so double majoring is easier in some fields than others. They don't have a music minor, but one of their music majors (BA) works pretty easily as a second major. Scholarship money is available to all musicians, but majors get more of it.
It is only D's second college visit, so she's not willing to give too much opinion yet. She says she could see herself here. The admissions folk were quite friendly and helpful. Our guide was also very nice, although she didn't seem especially "enthusiastic" when I asked her if she liked it there. She's a senior, so maybe she's just ready to be out.
It seems a very nurturing place to me, but in some ways, a lot like high school.

We stopped by the Furman campus last Friday, as we were passing through SC. Everyone was gone for Easter, but the campus was gorgeous. Sorry we stopped, though, as it only made D like it more. Furman hasn't come through with the money, so it's not looking good. We are sending an appeal, though.
In the meantime, please feel free to point out the negatives and flaws in the attached photo.

My D and I were at Furman for a music competition in January 08. Beautiful campus, but I would caution potential music majors. The practice rooms were awful- no soundproofing and the pianos were in poor condition. The piano in the classroom assigned for her competition performance was out of tune.
She's only in 8th grade now, but that experience really taught us what to look for when we start her college tours.
