I'm so happy for your daughter, Outwest. She always seemed like someone who was going to blossom where ever she was planted, and Bryn Mawr is a wonderful garden.

Both of my daughter's roommates and at least half of her friends at Swarthmore were from California. They all enjoyed college in Philly a lot and, as far as I know, they are all living on the East Coast after graduation, some in grad school, some working. My daughter and two of her closest Calif friends are all settling in to jobs in D.C. They were able to do easy trips down to Washington to interview.
There is some culture shock for kids going between the coasts. It's probably a little more so for West to East kids because it takes them a while to figure out that the east coast "rudeness" isn't really rudeness, but just a style.

| InterestedDad- Since you're the Philly expert, what's the likelihood of being able to survive on a $14-16k stipend? I've been considering BMC for grad school, but I hadn't realized the area was so expensive.

They have housing for grad students at BMC. It does seem you would need a little more then that to survive, but grad school is only two years, right?

warblers:
It all depends on housing. At one point, my daughter looked at a fellowship in Philly with a $10k stipend, but it included housing and food.
If they have housing at Bryn Mawr included, then you would spend very little. Otherwise, you'd have to look at a room in a professors house or something...which wouldn't be all bad in a town like Bryn Mawr!
I don't get the sense that the overall Philly area is that expensive. Certainly not DC, NY, or Boston expensive. It's just the Bryn Mawr is among those really old close-in neighborhoods that are pricey in every city.

Under a week until we go and D is very excited.
BMC has done all kinds of things to make her feel welcome and a part of the school before she has even arrived:
-allowing West Coast students to get into the dorms a day early to scope it out for last minute purchases
-mailing boxes to be held for her
-emails of welcome from her personal faculty advisor asking her interests so she has an idea before their face to face conference the first week (no group advising there!)
-dorm customs groups to get to know each other before arriving
-invitations/signups to trips during orientation week
-and on and on
We are most impressed.

Wow, Bryn Mawr is sounding more and more enticing ....
I hope that your daughter has a great start there, Outwest!
