For the most part I think the CB exams are administered in environments that are far more controlled and secure than in the average HS classroom, but you do hear of problems. My S tells me he was shorted one minute of time on three sections of the ACT because the proctor apparently could not add time correctly to the room's analog clock. It made a difference, in his opinion. One could complain, I suppose, but to what effect?

I can't go into details, but your S's experience pales in comparison to the conditions in which one of my kids took one his exams this year. Not following protocol can cause the CB to invalidate an exam. So I called the school AP Coordinator and complained. She investigated, phoned back, apologized, thanked me, and said it would not happen again. I think it's worth a call.

I can top any story about bad test conditions. Last year a large group of my students took their SAT exams at the same high school (not the high school they attended). On the same day as the exam, the high school's ASB had a CARNIVAL going on right outside the rooms where the tests were being given. There was continual shouting from the games outside, loud music (including at one point, the school's marching band going past!), trucks dropping off things, etc.  In the middle of the test, the proctors told the students to get up and start rearranging the furniture in the room to try to move the seats away from the windows. But -- and I am not making this up!-- my personal favorite was that shortly afterwards, several kids told me that a FIDDLER swung open the door to the testing rooms, and started playing madly in the middle of the test!!!

When I called the College Board to complain, the customer service lady and I both burst out laughing when I got to the part about the FIDDLER. It was totally absurd. Unfortunately, the College Board would NOT negate the test for my students, or offer them another free go on a different test date. I also called the high school and they were pretty non-challant about the whole thing. After that, however, I told all my kids not to take any standardized tests at that particular high school. What a nightmare!

Carolyn, you win! No fiddler but *almost* a marching band (inside).
