Joy,

First, congrats to your daughter for those AP scores.  I really appreciated your explanation of how your daughter was able to take all those AP classes and it was not bragging..but you do have every reason to.  I wondered about my very bright daughter ending up with so many less and understand it more now.  Our school runs very differently.  She is upset about wanting to be an art major and having no AP art courses when she applies.  She registered for AP Art History and for the second year in a row, they did not have enough students to run the course.  Since that course will show up as available on her school profile, I wonder where the best place to explain that will be.  There is no other AP art offered.  She does not want to take that type of course online and truly would burn out with another course in her already very challenging senior schedule.  Our kids are required to take the honors science course first and then are able to take the AP.  Thus, the only way to do AP is to double up or use a science as an elective.  My daughter finished French 4 as a junior and next year she will take University of Connecticut French 5 which will give her six college credits (though none of the school she will apply to will probably take them) and it won't show as an AP.  I'm not concerned because I think that her school profile, course selection and grades will show that she had solid abilities and reasoning behind her choices.  We will need to make sure that things like that missing AP Art History class are explained.  Is this something we should make sure is mentioned in her art teacher or guidance recommendations?

Apologies for getting so off topic.

Yes, we expect our S may want to apply to a few math/science collleges, possibly as his reaches, along with some UCs and USC.

He's not into the planning stage just yet. He's now with CTY taking a fast paced HS physics course. We got a sneak preview of price shock ... even my DH (the math prof) was surprised. We didn't get to know of the text until the day class started and thus paid $180 for a new one!

CTY does much better with the online courses since that section of their web site provides links for lower cost versions of the text. Thus we got a soft cover version of the linear algebra text for $36 including shipping (thank you Australia.) Price for a new, hard cover version: $123.

slightly off topic -- ok, completely off topic -- but we've found online sources great for college texts, but gotta track down the ISBN.  If you subscribe to Amazon Prime, you recieve free two-day air, and no sales tax.

Scoop, just an aside, but please tell your daughter that it is probably best to wait to take Art History in college. High Schools typically teach it, including AP, very differently than the way it is taught in good art programs.

Scoop-thanks for your kind words.  It's good to be understood!

SoCal Mom-Your son is fortunate to have your help to find the courses he needs.

We are so very lucky at our large public high school to have the college teacher come to the high school to teach the college level math-2 semesters of Calculus, and then the next two courses that typically follow them, Linear Algebra in the fall I think, and I don't even know the name of the course that dd will have in the spring.  (Gee I not only can't help with the homework, I don't even know the name of the class!)

After reading this board, I realize how unusual it is to have those courses beyond the 2 Calculus classes available on the high school campus.  Now I feel very lucky that my math-loving dd ended up by chance in this neighborhood with such great opportunities.

We do buy the college textbooks, though, so I know what you mean about the sticker shock.  For Calculus, she needed the latest edition text, plus the solutions book.  Being newbies, we weren't brave enough to buy an older edition than what was required.

concur with carolyn re:  art history.  OTOH, AP Art History satifies the VAPA requirement for UC and Cal State, so it's worth a look for those not interested in band/orchestra,  theater, or hands-on art.  And, it's one of the few VAPA courses with a UC bonus point.
