As is typically the case, the AP Score Report phone service became available this afternoon, a few days before the advertised July 1 date. All scores for 2008 can be retrieved by calling 1-888-308-0013. You will neeed:
-- either the student's AP registration number or SSN (if they provided the SSN on the test form). The registration number can be obtained through customer service if it is not otherwise available.
-- student's personal info (birthdate, in particular)
-- a credit card number and expiration date (there is an $8 charge for which you receive all available scores).
If you do not wish to pay the charge, scores will be mailed in about 3 weeks.

BTW, this week seems to be particularly test intensive, with the scores from the May AP tests, June SAT tests, and June ACT test all made available in the last four days. I have never noticed the overlap before.
Anyone have irons in all three fires?

To the contrary--this set of AP scores will be the last standardized test scores I'll ever be interested in. I'm thinking that by the time GREs, LSATs, or whatever roll around, I'll be blissfully unaware! For now, however, I have my fingers crossed that he'll be able to jump over some courses with these AP scores (he has freshman orientation next weekend). If only we hadn't thrown away his AP number in the post-graduation paper purge. We'll have to wait until Monday.
Good luck to anyone who's just beginning. There's light at the end of the tunnel, even if you have to pay the College Board 8 bucks for a sneak preview.

| Thanks for the info. Curious as we are, we'll wait for the paper reports, which I think will be coming in the next week or so? Last year I think I remember the scores came within the first 10 days or so of July...?

| Now that I found out you could call, I could not resist. D did have those three scores coming within a few weeks of each other.

The years that a kid takes only one test, we wait for snail mail scores. But this year, it was three tests/one kid, so I could justify the splurge/total waste of $$ for the phone call. (Silly that they charge for this service, isn't it?)
And the news was good x 3! And that kid is DONE with entrance tests!! Happy day! He'll take AP's next year as a senior, but the scores won't come out, of course, until after he's admitted.

| Well since my son has no clue about his AP number, and didn't enter his social security number on the answer sheet, we will be waiting for the paper scores too. My son actually has been sort of laxidaisical about worrying about his scores. The only one he is really interested in is Calc BC, mainly because the score will determine which math class he can take in the fall at his college.

I'm stocking up on duct tape. Fang Jr could call for his AP score but hasn't. He could check his spring quarter grades online, but hasn't yet.
I could do both of those things too, but I am, with difficulty, leaving them to him.

Wstrdg,
I bet being done feels good. My D may actually be done as well. Next years AP scores won't matter in admissions and she did well on the one she took this May. Luckily, she has no problem with me checking scores. For her, it's one less thing for her to do

Just FYI, it would still be possible for him to get his score by phone. He could contact customer service to get his AP number and go from there. We did the same here last year.

Thanks for the tip! It was worth the 8 bucks to my D (three AP's this year).
Final haul: 3,3,4,4,4,5,5
The threes won't count and one of the fours doesn't count, but she will start college next year with four credits worth of classes for the remaining two 4's and two 5's. That means that she can take higher levels of those things or take one fewer class a few semesters or not take one of the distributions that she passed.
She is a happy camper and is saying those APs were worth it. Of course, it is easy to say that after the fact.....

Thanks Descartes - I did call and get his number. All went well, and he is now an AP Scholar with Distinction.

| Outwest, I bet you had the same reaction I did about the scholar with distinction - too late to put on college applications! LOL!

Congrats indeed!
An AP Scholar with Distinction requires taking a minimum of five exams. The only way a student is going to pull off having it on his/her college application is to either start cranking with 2 or 3 AP classes sophomore year (when most students don't meet the pre-reqs to do so) or take five AP classes junior year (which sounds like an Evel Knievel act.)
Oh, a third option is to take AP exams without taking the class, which I've read does occur. DS is entertaining such a thought for AP Spanish Literature since his schedule's already too much for next year. While the drive is admirable, the parent in me thinks, "So, what happens with that little bump in the road, say, the flu for a few days? Getting back on track could be brutal."

Yes, some of these awards say as much about the school as they do about the student. My dd has finished 8 AP classes, so I just realized that she will be a National AP scholar and can write that on her applications next fall when she's applying.
It's a great accomplishment, especially that she got all 5s except one 4.
BUT, she is at a school which offers lots of APs, and uses AP classes as a sort-of gifted program. So, often a freshman will take AP Human Geography and many sophomores take AP World History.
In addition students who do very well in 9th grade science can then take AP science classes without a prerequisite class. My dd took one year of Bio in 9th grade, then AP Bio the next year, AP Chem as a junior, and will take AP Physics next year. Many juniors at her school take AP English and US History, those who have stuck with their foreign language are at the AP level junior year, and the math/science kids take Calculus and an AP science class, so they end up with 5 AP classes just by continuing along in their progression of classes.
I don't mean to downplay this award, but I think it tells colleges things that are already evident in her transcript-she's at a school which offers lots of APs, and which does not have roadblocks preventing excellent students from taking them, she's taken a rigorous curriculum and done very well in the classes and on the AP tests.
One advantage of taking 5 AP tests-you get a lot of bang for your 8 buck phone call!!
I hope this doesn't sound like bragging. I think it's helpful to realize how different schools can be, and how important it is to look at these awards in the context of the particular school. Many of my dd's friends will finish high school with 10-12 AP classes. No one we know self-studies instead of taking a class- the school just makes it easy to take the classes if the students is willing and able.

Some of the decisions that need to be made are a delicate balancing act. Parents, anyone feel ready for the balance beam in Bejing?
My DS could have had another AP class next year by taking AP Stats. However, after the AP Calculus teacher had a discussion with DH who's a math professor, it was decided DS could do better. So DS will be taking a distance learning class in linear algebra next year, followed by multivariable calculus senior year.
He'll get no AP for this. However, the HS will give it a weighted GPA as if it was an AP. More importantly, DS hopes this path will provide a hook for his applications (along with the others who are doing the same since this certainly isn't unique. )

Carolyn, Yes, I did think it was a bummer she couldn't put that distinction on her college apps, but she did get to put AP scholar with honor (4 APs) on them. That was very nice. It wouldn't be possible at her school to get distinction as a Junior. I am pretty certain of that.
SoCalMom, Is your S planning on applying to math/science schools? My D took through calculus in Junior year, but stats was the only choice after that and it wouldn't fit in her schedule. What with senioritis, 3 APs senior year was more than enough. Luckily, in the end she pulled it together and had all As. I think the teachers cut the kids a little slack at the end particularly since those AP tests are mid May and she still had a month of school after that. They did an awful lot of movie watching.
