Carolyn is right. The ACT is much easier to get accommodations for if you have the right documentation. They look for length of time one has had a disability and diagnosis. They both prefer private testing, but ACT will take slightly older testing where the SAT wants very recent testing. ACT gives triple time to students with dyslexia. SAT will give time and a half but they don't give use of a reader unless the student has a recent diagnosis of dyslexia. Auditory processing skills or the discrepancy diagnosis they used to use doesn't work anymore unless one has an active IEP that states a student is severely disabled.
Most high schools try to get students out of their LD programs, so the tendency is to write IEPs in such a way that it appears the student's disability is no longer severe. If that is the case, then an IEP won't work to get the more stringent accommodations.
In either case, privte testing with a written diagnosis is much better than school testing.
