| My son took his PSATs today, and is scheduled for the SATs in December. Does anyone how long before the PSAT scores are released? Thanks in advance.

| CB sends the score reports to the high schools the first week of December, but some GC's hold them until after winter break.

| Our school holds them until after the winter break (why?). But maybe that's just for the freshmen and sophomores...maybe the juniors get the results earlier? I'll find out this year!

Used to be our HS policy as well, until I asked the GC 'why'? Besides some mumbling, he had no real answer (besides his own convenience), so they were distributed two days later. (The only reason I knew the school had them was bcos I just happened to be volunteering in the office the day the fedex pkg arrived from CB.)

| Our schools hold them til after the break because the counselors have a big explain-the-scores powerpoint presentation. Too much stuff scheduled in December, so they take an open night in January. Frustrating, but there it is.

| We were hoping to use them as a guage as to whether he's ready to sit for the December SATs, so I hope we get them earlier rather than later.

| We had the same question - how much prep might be needed before the SAT. I called D's guidance counselor and she was willing to tell me D's score. Might be because she knew that, by the 3rd kid, I knew what the score meant. I phrased the question as wanting to know whether to pay for a prep class or not.... the answer was "save your money, she doesn't need help". I didn't tell anyone else - didn't want to start a stampede of parents calling.

| CB told me the scores won't be out until mid December, and the SATs are December 1st, so it looks like we won't have the PSAT scores before he sits for the SATs . . . but that's a good idea. I'll ask his guidance counselor. Thanks!

Many schools don't send the results out until after Christmas break. The reason is simple: guidance offices are usually innundated with processing college applications for seniors in December. If you've ever stayed up each night writing recommendation letters for hundreds of students, and faced a day jam packed with putting out application fires for hundreds of seniors, you'd understand why getting those junior PSAT results out aren't the major priority at many schools.
The PSAT scores NEVER arrive in time to make a significant diffference in terms of prepping for the SAT in December -- that's one of the reasons I recommend waiting for a later test date if you need the PSAT scores to prep or decide whether to take a prep course. Really, if you're going to take prep seriously on your own or take a prep course for the December 1 test, it's probably already too late to do so at this point.
With few exceptions (generally kids who have prepped well for the PSAT itself), I also don't like kids to sit for the December SAT -- January is early enough, and, I think March is even better. That extra few months of school and maturity can make a big difference for some kids, even without any prep. There really is NO RUSH to take the SATs -- you have until next November/December to finish them up after all. The SAT and ACT are both designed for seniors, not students who have just started junior year. Sure, some kids do just fine taking them early, but what's the rush?
I know it's hard to wait for the scores, but the college admissions process is filled with waiting, so it's best to get used to it.

| Thanks, Carolyn. Just to explain, we mapped out this strategy with my son's tutor, who he's been working with weekly since August. The January test date is no good because it comes at the end of exam week for him, and he'll be fried. And he has to do SAT IIs in June, along with APs and Regents (a NYS test), so we felt (and he agreed) to try December to see if he hits his numbers and then re-test in March if necessary, or maybe try the ACT. He took the PSATs as a sophomore and did well, so we have those scores as guidance. So, he did prep for the PSATs and SATs simultaneously. As for senior year, there's a possibility he'll be doing early decision, so we want a good idea of where he stands before then. His tutor thinks he'll be ready for December, and after taking the PSATs this week, he does, too.

I also think that an earlier SAT test is needed to assess the ED options. My son is taking SATs in November of his Junior year, in April/May of his Junior Year, and, if need be, again in the fall. If his scores are in range, he will not have to fit in the Senior year SAT sitting again.

| My s decided to take the SAT last November, s a Junior, since he'd prepped for the October PSAT and was , in my words, "in the zone" . While I was ambivalent about it, thinking it was better to wait til Jan or May, I was wrong. He did well, and decided not to retake in June. So, with the exception of his SATIIs, which he took in May, he was done by last fall. Worked out well for us (well, we'll find out for sure when the applications are all in and the results are back). Just a thought, though perhaps a little late for this year.

D is not supposed to get her results until Monday at school. The 2007 score report appeared on the College Quick Start site this morning. She raised her 10th grade score of 179 to 205 this year. 2006 scores were 65,56,58 and 2007 scores were 72,61,72. I hope I can convince her to crack the SAT study guide now as I gave the PSAT book to our neighbor in brand new condition. I'm really happy for her.
What does it mean when a question is unscored? The report does not show that her answer was unreadable or omitted, it just says n/a and then unscored?

From the College Board website:
Question number 21 from the writing skills section of the Saturday form of the 2007 PSAT/NMSQT was removed from scoring. Due to a printing error that affected a significant number of test books, several letters of a word appearing in one of the answer choices for Question 21 did not print properly. To rectify this problem, question number 21 was not scored for any test taker. It is important to note, however, that the removal of this question did not affect the comparability of the 20-80 scaled scores for this section. Even with the removal of this question, the statistical process of equating, which is used to translate raw scores (based on right, wrong, and omitted responses) to scaled scores, ensures that the 20-80 scaled scores on this section are comparable to scores on the writing sections of other editions of the PSAT/NMSQT.
I was surprised, but apparently at the last minute my son's school passed out the PSAT score reports during class yesterday. They had previously said they would only be distributed in January at their "PSAT night".
