My daughter took the PSAT as a 9th grader this year just because she wanted to. She received her scores at school yesterday:
Critical Reading 65
Math 52
Writing 61
Total score of 178
That seems pretty good for a 9th grader. She (like my S) is not a math-y person. But this gives her an idea of what these standardized tests are all about, and what she needs to focus on (math) for future tests.

Thank you Fireflyscout I was glad to see her writing score go up as that is usually a strong area for her. Math will always be much lower for her and that's ok too. I know nothing about what scores are necessary for being commended. Is that known now, or something you find out as a senior? Hummingbird, your daughter should be proud of herself. Those scores are very similar to my D's in 10th grade. She is nothing if not consistent Last edited on Sun Dec 16th, 2007 01:39 am by scoop

| Scoop, this year the commended cutoff score was 200. It changes from year to year, and I think the number was announced in late summer or early September (of senior year). Last edited on Sun Dec 16th, 2007 02:04 am by hummingbird

Anyone who is at least commended will be notified in May, but the letter won't say whether it's commended or semifinalist. That information will be given in late August/September.

Is the commended score cut-off the same in every state? That seems kind of bizarre since the semi-finalist cut-off score has such a wide range, from 200 this year in WV and WY to 223 in MA and DC! I know the semi-finalist score is supposed to represent the top 1% in each state, maybe the commended score just means you did a great job, no matter where you live.

| Commended is the same in every state, but the cut-off for semi-finalist (the next step up in the competition) varies from state to state. For instance, in California this year it was 217 - my son missed it by one stinking point. If we lived in Arkansas or Oklahoma, he'd be semi-finalist. I do think that it is silly to call it "NATIONAL Merit" when in reality, making it to the last leg is "STATE Merit."

| I'd almost rather miss by a lot than by one point!!

| Especially when one additional wrong answer can amount to as much as 5 points on the index.

I agree -- when I hear someone is "National Merit" and it's not from our state, then I want to know which state. Depending on the state and its cutoff score, it might or might not impress me much.
It also seems ridiculous when those NMSF-hungry colleges/universities court the 200 scorer from AR or OK as much as the 223 scorer from MA. But National Merit is National Merit with no distinctions as to state.
My son won't know his PSAT score until after the holiday break, I'm sure. I don't even know if he gets a session with the GC to explain it. (He took it in 9th and 10th grades, and don't think he got a session then.) I just hope the GC is working as hard as she apparently is for this year's seniors next year (the excuse for not giving out the scores, I think).

My son got his scores on the College Board website today. And no, he didn't register for "Quick Start." Let me explain -- three years ago took the last administration of the old SAT as an 8th grader "just for fun." (He could have used his scores to qualify for any CTY program, but he was never interested; he didn't register for the SAT through CTY.) His older brother took care of registration, and although he's here with us now (semester break), he couldn't remember the e-mail address he used, the user name, or the password. This was Tuesday. Second son needed that information, because he was nearly down to the wire to register for the 1/26 SAT test date, and had tried to register on Tuesday by setting up a new account. College Board wouldn't let him, telling him there was already an account for that name.
So today bright and early I called College Board to get them to crack the code from three years ago. When I got the necessary information, and my son went to register online, he saw there was a link to his 2007 PSAT scores.
*If* the National Merit Semifinalist cutoff for our state remains the same as it was for this year's senior class, he missed the cutoff by one stinking point. In many states he would be a semifinalist. Darn! But the 80 in CR was very nice, and we hope he can duplicate that on the SAT.

Aww that's awful about being a lone point shy. Congratulations on the excellent score for your son Deja! Hopefully the NMF cut off lowers a point, it had some rough sections. I envy him, CR was my lowest section haha!
I hope he does well on the SATs in January, I'm taking mine for the first time then. I'm nervous... good luck!

Thanks, Kayleigh. CR would be his best score (although, interestingly enough, his Math and Verbal scores were not that far apart three years ago). He reads a lot.
Were you able to get your PSAT score yet?
My son has taken practice SAT tests, so I don't think the real thing will be that much of a shock come January 26. I think the plan will be to see how he does, and then maybe take it again later this spring. In June he will take his SAT2 subject tests (Biology, US History, and maybe Math....how many can a student take at one time?).
Good luck to you, too, come January 26!

Hmm; Math has always been my best subject in any type of standardized tests even though until recently I despised math and loved English. (I love to read.. I haven't been able to lately though. Which explains a lot)
Yea actually. I got my PSAT scores back pretty early, I did 11 points better than last year but nothing amazing (57/64/60)
I've been taking the practice tests but not at the same time, just sections at a time. that's sort of my plan too.. I'll take it now and again as need be (May probably, and then if I find a big reach school and need AMAZING scores, in the fall) I haven't decided what to do about Sat2 tests, I need to figure out if I want to take them and which ones to take. (FYI, you can take 3 at one time.)
Thanks!!!
