Rising hs sr s found out earlier this week that his GC will not check that coveted "most rigorous curriculum" box on the Common App, despite the intern GC telling him that she would and she was almost certain the regular GC would, too.  The regular GC is now back from maternity leave, and she informed s that he would have to have calculus and AP Physics (or AP Environmental Science) for her to check the box.  (He had planned to take AP Stats and regular -- we have no honors -- physics.) Interestingly, it does not matter that he's stopping short of AP Spanish, and is not taking any foreign language this coming year.

This is making me wonder if my 11-regular-high-school school system has a standard procedure for how to determine what triggers the "most rigorous curriculum" box to be checked, but there is nothing we can do to change that now.  I will just add that to the all-scores-on-transcripts issue that I may or may not tackle at some point.

Ds is now taking AP CalculusBC and AP Physics, and has dropped AP Stats.  He started and dropped CalcAB last year, and won't attempt that course again because the teacher is awful.  He had the BC teacher in 9th grade for Alg2/Trig, and so that is why he's in BC.  Now there is a conflict between AP Psych and a theatre class, and his GC advised him to take theatre, because he's had leads in plays, and has taken theatre throughout.  I agree; he will certainy have opportunities to take psych classes in college, but he might never take a theatre class again.  So AP Psych is out of the mix.

Because of scheduling issues, he is only taking six classes -- AP CalcBC, AP Physics, AP European History, AP English Lit, theatre and two required semester electives for his legal-oriented school-within-a-school.  He will be able to leave 4th block every other day, and will have a free 3rd block on the other day.

We just got back from a 3-college tour, and will be seeing another college (currently the favorite of my son) in a few weeks.  Spending time looking up the college reviews of these places both here and at CC!

He had interviews at two of the three places (one doesn't offer on-campus interviews; he will get one from an alum when he applies), and those were good practice, because he's really been wondering what the interviews are like.

It sounds like his schedule has worked out OK, if not ideally. Hope his college list is starting to solidify as well!

We made a trip to the DC colleges (he really wants to go to college in or near DC).  As a result of that trip, one place is a clear favorite (for all of us!).

Next weekend we make a special trip to see one of his top-three choices.
