College Board leaders announced in an e-mail message to high-school teachers on Thursday that the AP program would eliminate its Italian, Latin literature, French literature, and computer science AB courses, the Post reported. All of the courses have low enrollment. The Italian course, for example, is serving only 1,642 students nationwide.

That makes sense from their perspective but it seems unfair to those counting on those subjects.

Washington area educators expressed surprise to hear of a retreat in AP, which has expanded in the region this decade.
"In my experience, I have not known the College Board to cut back," said Carol Blum, who oversees AP in Montgomery County. Several of my professors (and those at many other schools) have been pushing for CB to establish an AP course in Geology. This doesn't bode well.

Interesting. My son is currently taking Computer Science AB. Next year he'll be taking AP Latin, but I believe it is AP Latin: Vergil.
I've never been entirely certain of the difference between Comp Sci A and Comp Sci AB, although son can enlighten me. Not surprised about French Lit and Latin Lit - students usually opt for the other AP French and AP Latin. Sorry to hear about Italian, though.

My S has been doing AP French Lit as an independent study junior/senior years. He meets weekly with the GT coordinator, and also with one of the French teachers. He took AP French Language as a junior.
AP French Lit is designed to be a 2-year course of study, and our HS hasn't offered it because it requires kids to be at a more advanced level than starting French in 7th grade will enable them to achieve. (We arranged for some French instruction for my S outside of school before that, which enabled him to skip a year.) The same thing holds true for AP SPanish Lit, I believe. But more kids in the US are being steered towards studying Spanish, so there are probably more candidates out there. (Not to mention all the native Spanish speakers.)
