My S has the A/B schedule that others have described, but this year they tweaked it in a way I don't quite understand yet, so I can't comment. Positives about the A/B schedule: longer class periods promote discussion and allow more time for labs, field trip, group work in class, and consulting with the teacher. Negatives: Not great for some kids in math and foreign language. And my S rarely did his homework until the night before it was due.

This year my S has a free period to compensate for a college class that he's taking after school. Managing a 2+ hour block of free time is going to be interesting, but good practice for next year, I guess.

The blocks at the high school in the district I work in are about 80 minutes long.  There are 4 in a day.  They also get 30 minutes for lunch and a 25 min. flex time.  Flex time is like homeroom, but it is used for band lessons, test makeup, getting help in a class, homework, tutoring, etc.  Seems to work ok for everyone.

My son's school moved to block scheduling a few years ago.  At the time, I thought it would ruin the education and was not pleased.  After the first semester, we all decided it was the best system we'd ever seen.  They rotate classes daily so no two days are identical, and attend each class 3 times a week.  The classes are longer so more material can be taught in each class, and they don't have homework in every class every night.  Yes, some of the teachers load them up with 2 nights of homework, but in the end they are still doing the same volume of work, just spreading it out over 2 nights instead of one at a time.   If nothing else, it is more like college, where they will attend most classes only 2 or 3 days a week and must organize their time accordingly.
