TurnHere video guides:

http://www.turnhere.com/Default.aspx

Not a book, but nice & free internet videos ("short films, cool places") featuring lots of college towns: Isla Vista (UC Santa Barbara), Davis (UC Davis), San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly SLO), etc.

Focus is on the town, and not the school, but where the school is a significant part of the local life, you'll get a nice feel for how the school and the town interact.

Hint: if you don't see a particular town listed, search for it.  You'll get a peek at Chico CA for example, in the video about the Chico Yo-Yo Museum.  And if you enter "San Diego," you'll find 12 films about various neighborhoods.

I guess, in the way of disclosure, I should mention that some of the videos on TurnHere are advertisements: they are marked "Sponsored."  But even these are worth your time, if you want a peek at the locals.

Wstrdg, Thanks for this. One of the things I'm trying to get my students to do is learn more about other areas of the country as part of the college search process. Some of my students have never been out of San Diego county -- Los Angeles is considered "far away." That site will come in handy as a teaching tool. Thanks!
