It's been at least three years since I ordered a stack of videos from these folks, but I don't think much has changed.  Warning:  these may put you to sleep, but as their website says, they aren't Hollywood film producers.  Instead, you get mom and dad and the (shaky) videocamera, faithfully recording the entire campus information session walking tour.  So, if you can't make it clear across the country, or if you want to a quick peek before you spring the big bucks for airfare and hotels, this may be the very thing you need.

And another caveat:  the tour you view may be a few years old.  Still, not much changes, especially in terms of campus appearance.

And *hurray, hurray* because these videos are now on DVD!  I gave a sackful of my old VHS versions to the local high school.  If you don't want to buy, you might try your school's GC office for a copy to borrow.

I was also happy to discover they are now on DVD. I do agree with you - they are beginning to show their age! And, my daughter and I always joked how they go out of their way NOT to show any people (maybe  for legal reasons?) so their use in trying to get a sense of who goes there is limited.  But, if you just want to see what the campus looks like, they are a good start.

Just a warning though -- while my daughter liked watching them, my son was bored within the first two minutes (and that's of the one covering his "dream" school). Mom enjoyed them though. :)

There was one in particular, I can't remember which one, that gave me the spins. I mean I literally had to take dramamine after watching it for a few moments because of the way he spun the camera around so much.

So I ordered a few of them and have watched parts of each. Are they not allowed to show the tour guide? It would be better to be able to see the person who is talking; otherwise the camera usually just shows the same building or two for the entire time he/she is standing there talking. The camera guy literally pans over the head or at the feet of the guide!

I'm glad I ordered them, though - it does give an idea what the school is like.

Hummingbird, my daughter and I have long pondered why they don't show the tour guide, and we finally arrived at this conclusion: The collegiate choice people didn't ask for permission to film these walking tours (on a few of the tapes they can be heard telling the tour guide or other people on the tour that they're just taping them for "their" students). Since these were done "unofficially" without the permission of the schools involved, perhaps for legal reasons they decided not to show any person who might sue them for compensation afterwards.

Both my daughter and I also agree with you that that not showing the tour guides is the most frustrating and annoying part of these tapes. Still, for getting an intial impression of what the school looks like in "real life" they can do a good quick and dirty job.

Now that I'm starting the process with kid #2, it was nice to see these on DVD, too.  But I do have to admit to playing a game of "catch the reflection of the tour guide and Jersey guy in passing windows" whenever the DVDs lag.
