I just called my son on his cell phone and asked him where he was. As it happened, he was in front of the student union which is in clear sight of one of his university's web cams.

I turned on my computer, went to Cornell's Live View web page, and there he was! I'm a little embarrassed that I find this so exciting, but I got a very good view of what he was wearing, who he was with, and how he seemed to be doing. He looked great! I told him to ask his friend to wave to me and she did :-)

LOL! This is so funny! But I can relate. My daughter's best friend is writing a blog for Beloit admissions this year, and I get so excited when she mentions my daughter or puts up pictures with her in them. The other day she put up a picture on the blog that only had my daughter's FEET in it, but, gosh darn, didn't I recognize them and get a thrill out of seeing them!

Son is a senior but when he was a freshman I spotted him on the webcam.  It made me so happy to see him walking with confidence.  I wanted to call him, but didn't.  Sometimes just checking the webcam gives me a boost when I miss him.  I haven't seen him again but the activity and life I see is calming for me.

SKYPE!!!  :D

My older daughter is currently studying abroad in Turkey but she has skype, and we  can see her!  It's like a picture phone on your computer.   It's really cool and I feel so fortunate especially when I think about how hard it would be if we could communicate only via snail mail or by an occaisional expensive phone call... If your kids don't think it's too intrusive- check it out - my other daughter (who is still stateside) also has it and she and her suitemates get a charge out of seeing things like our cat and her little brother...oh, and it's basically free if you have a webcam.
