This week's update reports on legislation in the Senate:
QUOTE In the wake of April's campus shootings at Virginia Tech, legislation moving through the U.S. Senate would amend the Jeanne Clery Act to require timely alerts to college and university campus communities about any "immediate threat to the health or safety of students or staff, occurring on the campus." The provisions were included in a comprehensive, bipartisan higher education bill,
S. 1642, passed by the Senate's Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions last week. ENDQUOTE
At S1's frosh orientation, we were given instructions to sign up online for the university's "reverse 911" plan. You can enter landline, cell and email info for notification by voice and text in the event of a campus emergency. Notices can go to students, parents, family, friends. Notices can be discontinued at a given date, too, for instance, for my S2 who will only be there for a brief period over the summer.
If your univ hasn't given you the info, ask if they have a similar notification system.

| Our town uses this and it has worked well in the past. It would be a great thing to have on campus.
