| Just thought that I would post that everything from preorientation to last leaving has gone extremely well. We dropped our son off at Bates College for his preorientation trip (a canoe trip with six other freshman/women and two trip leaders) where we moved him in and he met one of his roommates. The rooms are small but not as small as the bunks at the camp he has been a camper/counselor at for the past nine years. We (parents) then went to Bar Harbor for five days. That was lovely and the weather was perfect. We came back to Bates for a parent orientation which included a lecture on the perils of Facebook and a welcome by the college president. My son seems to have adjusted extremely well and extremely quickly. He is taking more risks socially by making a grater effort to start conversations with people he hardly knows. After a few hours he could not wait for us to leave so he could begin his new life. I do believe he is in a very good place and will thrive there.

Alan:
while bittersweet, there is nothing like a kid finding his/her people on the first day of check-in and signaling to a parent, 'ok, its time for you to go'. It means you have done your job well. Congrats.

| Congrats for a successful launch, Alanarch. Our D was delivered 2 weeks ago. (I'm still sad.) She is doing well. Empty nest starts Wednesday when S2 returns for his senior year. Last edited on Mon Sep 3rd, 2007 05:24 pm by binx

| It seems that the first thing my wife and I are doing is reorganizing his room, especially his closet, and by extension, the rest of the apartment. We have a large apartment by Manhattan standards but you never have enough storage space. I finally finished repairing the shelf under the sink. Life goes on.

Congrats on a successful liftoff, Alanarch. At our parent's orientation we were given a general rundown of the scheduled events for parents, including "the farewell picnic. [pause for effect]. We call it that for a reason. They will be ready for you to be on your way by then." Boy were they ever. I never saw that many fidgety kids in one place in my life.

Congrats on the successful launch (and room re-organization), alanarch. We left S off at Carleton last Wednesday, after spending several days enjoying both Northfield and Minneapolis. S's roommate seems great (and, most important, S concurs in that assessment).
First reports from S are good, although he said that he's "oscillating rapidly" through that W theory of transition mentioned (heck, cited, with publiction year) in a parent hand-out. We got a phone message from him Wed. night, a quick reply to an e-mail from me (saying we'd gotten home okay) Thursday, and then a nice long phone update on Friday. Nothing since, which I take as a good sign.
H and I were so, SO sad Wednesday after leaving and through Thursday. We're really pleased that S is settling in and enjoying himself, but his absence has left a giant hole. We miss his help, his humor, and his lovely self. H and I are much better now, but we both used up a lot of tissues in those first two days. I think H was anticipating that loss; I think I avoided thinking about it.
