Do they need one or not? 1.7 cu ft (very small, teeny or no freezer) or 4.4-4.7 cu ft. Freezer or not? Rent or buy? Split the cost or have one roommate buy it and then work out sharing arrangements not based on money.

"need" is in the eye of the beholder....
Another option is a 3 cubic feet. They also come with a micowave on top instead of a freezer. But, check the college -- ours had a size limitation (3 cubic ft.), and said no microwaves.
Alto somewhat pricey, we purchased from CompactAppliance.com. The Avanti is extremely quiet.
PS: the larger units double as a printer stand!

My daughter rented last year (no roommate to split the cost). She found it useful. She liked to eat breakfast in her room so she could keep a small carton of milk or juice, some jam, bread, and margerine on hand. I think she mainly used it for cold drinks and items smuggled out of the dining hall, though.
However, renting for a year (for one person) was almost as expensive as buying a similar sized one from target, so compare prices. This time of year there are often very good deals on fridges and microwaves in target and wal-mart. My daughter didn't rent again this year and will buy one when she gets back to campus.

| Son's roommate bought the largest size allowed in their dorm. My son really liked it having it. He did miss having the freezer, but he was able to put some ice cream into his friend's freezer (someone who lived on the same floor in that dorm). He told me that he plans on getting one with a freezer this year, but I told him that I think that he will need to defrost it (not automatic defrost). I am not sure what he will decide. He will buy it once he gets to school.

I thought son's was 1.7 but now I think it is a 2.7. Except for the first few weeks of school, he as always "given" a shelf to his roomates. He probably could have done well with the smaller 1.7. He kept smoothies and drinks mostly,. He had several 7 am classes, so sleep was usually more important than breakfast. He found that cookies and brownies stayed fresher there also.
Freshman year he and a room mate used to shop Food for Less and buy big chunks of cheese and cheap sodas. They would eat cheese when they missed meals because of the busy schedule. After a few months, they tired of cheese. Son's first roomate had a hugh refrigerator which he had to sneak out when he was moved to another dorm.

Son's school does not rent them. This is the one thing I would like my son to contact the roommate about. I figured they don't need two or am I wrong? I can't imagine most college students defrosting a freezer. I just remember from my day the freezer space getting smaller and smaller as the term went on.
My d's school freshman year the room came with a micro frig/freezer without an extra charge.
My friend's husband works for a maintenance/construction company that serves apartments and houses in Isla Vista (UCSB) she told me that in June many of those small refrigerators are just left behind. With her D heading to school this fall he was able to bring home a refrigerator for her plus several of her friends. Not to mention quite a few nice bicycles.

mom61, no they don't need 2, and normally 2 per room are not allowed anyway. Defrosting is a pain, but forces them to clean it out
I will say that having a fridge saved my son $$! The vending machines on campus charge $2 for one soda (aka pop depending upon where you live ). My son and his roommate bought cases of bottled water and soda at Walmart. This way he did not waste a lot of money buying from vending machines on campus.

| In today's Target flyer there was a refrigerator for $89 and a microwave for $39. Best Buy's flyer had similar deals on both items.

Unfortunately no Target or Best buy here.
I am going to sit my son down and force him to email the roommate about the frig. We would probably buy it when we get to the college but we still might not know about the roommate. UOP has a few orientations so it is possible the roommate will not be moving in till several days after my son.

There is a KMart in Stockton. Can you buy here or online and have it saved for you up there? He should find out. Does he know how large the dorm room is?

| Think of all the money saved when your students are not paying $2/per drink by purchasing through vending machines! Lets see, at the price Carolyn mentioned, 45 purchases of vending machine beverages has the fridge paid for.

At Miami-OH, students are not allowed to bring their own fridges, but can rent from the school - I think it is $60 or $80 for the year, and if your roomie signs up for one, too, then the cost is split between you. It's a pretty nice size for a dorm fridge. My D needs one because she only drinks Carnation Instant Breakfast for breakfast and needs milk!
When we got there, roomie had the fridge nearly filled with bottled water. Had to move a few to fit a half-gallon of milk in. (We're too cheap for bottled water - D has a Britta filter-pitcher instead, with a small separate pitcher for the fridge.)
Only negative is that their fridge is noisy when the motor is running. If you bring your own, that might be something to check before you buy.
