In the past I have heard that BB&B, Target, etc. will allow you to order and have items available for pick-up at any store.
This is the option we thought we'd use for our D's cross country move. But now I cannot find that option on the store websites.
Is this something that must be done in person at the stores, or did I misunderstand, or have the store policies changed?
I'd appreciate any help.

When we used BB&B last year, we had to go into the store and purchase from the "Register" desk, i.e., Wedding Register. Shipping to other stores could not be performed online, at least last year. We finally gave up (the hassle to me) and shipped direct to the hotel where we stayed for orientation. Shipping charges were minimal, actually, since many items are kept in wharehouses around the country. If I recall, we had one ship charge ($8.95) for a bunch of little dorm stuff (hangers, rack, laundry bag, etc), that all came from different wharehouses in the NE.
Hope that helps.

| mominva, I'm doing what DDad did last year. One other good thing about the shipping option is that you can designate *when* you want it shipped. Carleton doesn't want anything to arrive before Aug. 20, so that's the shipping date I asked BB&B for.

How do you get everything back home at the end of the year? I'm trying to get S to plan to fit everything into one car as we are driving, but I wonder how it will get back home again, and then all back to college next year if he wait to buy some items until he arrives and sees the size of the dorms.

Carleton lets students store boxes of stuff. However, we're waiting to buy some items that S would probably like, because he won't be able to store things like a chair, etc. Only things that will fit into a box.
I saw parents on the Carleton parents list talking about renting and sharing a storage unit for such items over the summer. So that might be a solution as well.

How many sets of sheets and how many towels do they need? Mine thought one of each would be fine. I thought 2-3 of each so he doesn't have to do as much laundry.

We live close to the college and husband works just a few exits away. BUT, most parents see their kid more often than we see ours.
I sent son off with two sets of sheets, that worked for him. He does wash his sheets. In the winter I bought a flannel set-he appreciated that, it got cold in his dorms. First year I sent a Target dozen of white wash cloths-they came back untouched. I think he had 2 or 3 large Costco beach towels and a monogrammed towel set(present from my friend). He used one beach towel for water activities and the other for bathing. The towel set was used I think as a back up when the beach towel was too dirty-he could have lived w/o it. Re towels-I am glad I washed the set before he used them-they shedded quite a lot the first wash.
Son carries a beach towel in his car. Apparently a necessity, I didn't realized the beach is so close.
Each year we seem to be able to get son back with just his small car and my SUV. Redlands ends school in April, has a week break and then has May term. He comes back in the break with his car stuffed. Then I go up at the end of May term and he stuffs his car again. The first and second year, dad came by and picked up a few things. This year we had to throw away the cinder blocks because we needed the room in my car. Dad and son were never free during the last week at the same time.
Son has had several roomates who shipped back their extra stuff. The school also has bins where the students can donate items to local charities.

Wstrnmom, We rented a storage space near son's college. He washed and boxed things. My H and my son put it in storage when my H went to pick up my son. We rented the storage unit ahead of time (they suggested late Feb. or early March). I think that 4 mos. cost under $200, and all his stuff is not cluttering up our house. He came home with only summer clothes in one duffel bag. Also, if your son has a friend that would like to rent space and can be trusted, you could split the cost and share one storage space. We did not bother doing that.

Lynda, what beach? We are trying to keep it to one carload. I'm not planning on renting storage, although it's a good idea if they have a lot of large items or furniture. Mine won't. If he needs a small refrigerator I'm going to see if we can rent one instead of buying.

Sorry, I should have stated the short distance was in student's mind. The beach is far from close, in my opinion. Oceanside, Newport, Laguna, Long Beach.
Son and friends did use the school pool last year.
Son is also a fan of the Hitchhikers guide, a towel is involved but I don't get it.
I really think one car is very possible. Son will usually bring home books, clothes he won't be using during the breaks.
Just remembered, those vaccum bags worked great both ways to pack the linens. Didn't have a problem finding vaccums in the dorm.

I already packed the linens. The sheets were washed and sitting in a big pile which he didn't seem to have the least interest in dealing with. I finally got tired of tripping over it, folded everything up as small as possible and squished it all into the comforter bag. The comforter will go in the hamper since it won't fit back into a bag (I washed everything, it all smelled like new fabric). I'm trying to get everything as compact as possible.
Westrndad wants to know why S isn't doing this all himself, but he's busy out and about saying goodbye to friends who are starting to leave early for colleges out of state. I decided I need to stay busy so I don't get upset, so it's a win-win.
I'm trying to get S into a few stores to buy some school clothes, which also doesn't seem to interest him very much. I'm about ready to give up. I told him he can take all his old high school things instead if he's not going to shop. He did shop for just about everything else, except the items I picked up when I was out. So different from my daughter who had to select every single thing herself down to the pencils.

WestrnMom, it is win win. First year I thought of foam vs egg crate, comforter vs duvet so I didn't have to worry about anything. I wanted to pick up some new clothes at the Anniversary sale this year but he really didn't need anything. I bought a couple new dressy short-sleeved shirts and that was it. I couldn't believe Penquin shirts were back, bought one for my husband and son-husband's is still in the bag.
The Redlands mall has a retro thrift store run by a Jazz lover. Son and his friends have bought some great stuff really cheap. One friend has a tweed jacket that fits him and his personality that was about $5.

My daughter's school also has storage for kids, but she and some friends decided to go in on a local storage unit, so everything will be there waiting for her when she gets back. Although, from the look of her room right now, it seems like a lot of stuff has somehow teleported back here over the summer!
As for last year, we shipped a few boxes to her school address and they were waiting for us in the mailroom when we arrived. We also took a large suitcase on the plane with us. But , really, we could just as easily have waited and bought everything when we got there. There are targets, Wal Marts and BB&B everywhere these days.
In fact, Mominva, that is probably what I would recommend for your daughter - within ten minutes of USD there is a Container Store, a BB&B, another large linen store, two Targets, a Wal Mart, an Ikea, a Kmart' , a Macy's, a Penny's, and Sears T.hey are all well-stocked and between them, you and your daughter will be able to find everything she could possiblywant or need - so come a day early, and I'll be happy to give you directions.

Carolyn, things do have a way of teleporting back home. Even my older one manages to fill up a room while living in an apartment.
Lynda, what is the name of the thrift shop. Sounds perfect!

westernmom- my son has had absolutely no interest in shopping for anything. He is also so busy seeing friends that it just isn't a priority. I know it is easier to just do it myself but I do get annoyed. I think one of the factors is he just doesn't see the need to bring a ton of "stuff". My son is willing to bring all old items. He doesn't feel the need for new towels. He is happy to grab a few out of the linen closet. We had his old twin company store down comforter in the closet and he is fine with it. I went to Ikea and bought two duvet covers and he is fine with them both. I am figuring he will not use a top sheet. Just the duvet and a bottom sheet. He will bring clothes from his closet. He did go shopping with his little sister and she picked out a few new shirts and pants. She is his style guru. We are going by car which makes it much easier to just toss a few more items in the car. Plus I am sure Stockton will have everything that we might have forgot.
So different then his sister who everytime she moves it seems she needs to make numerous trips to Target and Ikea.

WestrnMom- Hobo Vintage 127 Cajon-moved from the mall. His group is Hobo Jazz.
If only we could teleport it all back. Son goes back the same time I have to start colonoscopy prep-maybe son and dad can bond together and move. The only break son might have would be Freshman move in day-house isn't on main campus so I should be able to find parking to bring up my SUV load. First two years, son's stuff made it to the living room. This year husband said just music in the living room-everything else has to go someplace else-now it is in ironing room, computer room, son's bedroom. The living room has just music but I think music stuff multiples better than rabbits.

mom61, if my D were my S's style guru, he'd look a lot like Dr. Frankenfurter in "Rocky Horror Picture Show." My husband the psychologist refers to her as "pathologically pink," although I don't think that particular diagnosis is in the DSM-IV.
Has your S gotten everything together for the start of his school year? He sounds pretty laid back.

How many sets of sheets?
Was that meant to be plural?
I vetoed DesperateMom's idea of sending three sets of sheets, and nixed the compromise of two sets (since I packed the UPS boxes). Son found it easy to strip the bed, wash and dry, and replace sheets back on bed in same day. For soph year, he only wants one set of sheets. His buddies at UCLA brought their second set home during the first break -- wasted too much storage space, except for the occasional toga party.
Full disclosure: Mom's female friends thought I was nuts....

Limner- his line- I don't leave for a week what are you worried about!
He has done a bit of the important stuff. He did get his TB test and Dr visit. He also met with his ADD psych Dr to fill out the important accommodation papers for the college. He didn't send either of them in but did leave them on the counter for me and his Dad to do something with them.
He washed the duvet covers and sheets. Started a list that has about 4 items on it.
He went through the college catalog and marked off the general ed classes in each required area that interest him so he has done something.
The hard part is his girlfriend and best friend aren't going anywhere. One is still in high school and the other is going to the local college. Several of the UC's and Cal States don't start till mid to late Sept so the getting ready to go fever isn't strong around him.
His school required both a TB test in the last 3 months and a blood test to confirm immunity to chicken pox. Thought both of those were unusual.
