Was that meant to be plural?  :P

I vetoed DesperateMom's idea of sending three sets of sheets, and nixed the compromise of two sets (since I packed the UPS boxes).  Son found it easy to strip the bed, wash and dry, and replace sheets back on bed in same day.  For soph year, he only wants one set of sheets.

Wait...your kid actually washes his sheets regularly at college? ;)

I sent my daughter to college with two sets of sheets. The second set was neatly folded in its vinyl wrapping on the shelf in her closet when I visited her in March. I can't vouch for how often she actually stripped the other set off of her bed and washed them during the year.

I was pretty anal about sending her off with 30 pairs of socks and underwear, though. Here's why:

One of my dearest friends is also one of the smartest people I know -- this is a girl who scored perfect 800's on her SATs back in the day when that got you mentioned in the NYTimes, who graduated third in her class at Harvard in physics, and who went on to be a very successful astrophysist.

Anyhow, about midway through our freshman year, I visited her at Harvard and she proudly told me about her "system" that allowed her to put off doing laundry for weeks at a time -- after she wore a pair of socks, she "aired them out" then turned them inside out for another wearing. She said she could get three or four wearings out of them that way. I didn't ask how she handled the underwear situation. I didn't want to know.

So, send extra socks and underwear before extra sheets. At least, I did, and my daughter, who just went out yesterday and bought MORE socks and underwear to take back with her, has thanked me multiple times. :)

buying ahead versus buying in the college town.

We live in a college town and I went to Linens and Things a few weeks ago and the dorm stuff was pretty picked over. I was nervous that we were going to have trouble finding things. Went back yesterday with son and the store had been entirely restocked with dorm like items. The woman working said that they had the intial shipments but then they do a major restocking and actually add more items for move in week at the university. She said for move in time they will also set up an outdoor area in the parking lot with more items.

I also found online the 20% off coupon and son was able to save 20 dollars on the ipod clock radio.

Mom61 - I had the same fears with my daughter and was surprised when we got to her school to see how well stocked the local stores were.  In fact, the prices were actually better on many items than when we had shopped in July. So, waiting and buying locally may be the way to go, especially if your child isn't picky about having a multitude of choices. (My daughter ended up with a plain navy blue bed quilt and plain red sheets. We really could have bought those anywhere!)

Do most students buy everything new or do they take things from home?  Replacing everything would get costly.  I've only purchased items he didn't have or things that were falling apart and couldn't be used again.

WesternMom- my son is purchasing very few items. He is fine with taking old towels and his old twin down comforter. So we are mainly purchasing things he did not already own. It helps that we are going by car. If we had to ship everything or carry it across the country I would probably spring for new items bought at the school location. Pillows and comforters take up lots of room in a suitcase but are easy to throw in the back of the car.

Linens and Things was also having 20% off mattress pads and egg crates yesterday.

WstrnMom, My daughter took a mixture of old and new as well. She isn't much of a shopper, and thought that taking things from home would make her feel more at home, so that is what we mainly ended up shipping to her or carrying in suitcases. She didn't want to take her bed linens from home though, as she wanted her room to stay "her room" for visits home, so those were the main new things she bought.

What is the best way to get a refrigerator?  Do you buy or rent, and if you buy what do you do with it in the summer?  We are not going to get storage, I've already made up my mind about that.

WestrnMom, storage of a fridge is one thing we're considering in the buy/rent decision. S's school has summer storage but only for things that will fit in boxes. I also need to find out if S has discussed any of this stuff with the long-lost roommate.

I did buy (and ship) new linens for S, but he comes hone at Thanksgiving and doesn't go back until Jan. 2, so he'll need linens for his bed then!
