Son will be in a dorm with a free standing closet this year. Last year he used a built in closet. Are those things big enough to hang everything, or do you need to buy something additional?

My dd is at a summer program at Loyola Marymount and the dorms have free standing closets. I suppose it depends on the actual closet, but hers is about 4 feet wide, with a shelf above the rack. She has been in two different rooms, in one there was another shelf about a foot from the bottom.  Since it is free standing, I suppose she could have used the top of the cabinet for storage for something soft and light (in case of earthquakes, you do not put stuff up high, unless you dont mind being bonked with it.)

son had one last year and it worked fine for him -- he hangs up a lot of clothers.  We did buy an hang off-the-door towel rack, however, which came in handy after playing outside in the snow.

Putting things up high in VA is not a problem. I see that you are from CA. I never thought about earthquakes where he is :) I cannot visualize it. Is this sized closet large enough? He does get some drawers as well (not too many, but it was enough last year with a roomy closet).

desperatedad, I cross posted with you. Thanks. I was a little bit disappointed in my son's room situation, but my son is very happy with it. I am worried about the practical side, and my son is not worried about that at all.

He is being tripled (not a temporary triple though). His housing was messed up (long story and not his fault). They were originally able to offer him a large room, but it was away from his friends, and it did not have A/C. He put himself on a list to get into this dorm, and they put him to the top of their b/c of the housing mixup. He got into the dorm that he would like, but he is being tripled to a converted study lounge that has become a permanent triple option. It is a huge room with multiple windows, and it was rewired for a permanent room to house 3 students. He is thrilled to be in this dorm, and get this converted room.

"Freestanding closet"??? Don't you mean "the floor"?

My daughter did fine with one last year -- her room was well organized & neat when I visited in March.  I guarantee you that my daughter has more clothes, more shoes, and more stuff in general needing to be stashed than your son.  (At the end of the year, she held her own mini rummage sale, and raised a tidy sum selling off much of what she didn't want any more to other girls in her dorm).

mackinaw, yes, the floor is the freestanding closet, until I come to visit (went to visit him and saw his room once last year). For the visit I am sure that he quickly got everything shoved into the closets with his roommate, so that I could stand on the floor:shock: How do I know this? Well, I asked him to pack his winter clothes last April to take them home at the time I visited. I found a package of Raeman type of noodles, and some papers mixed into the assortment of unfolded clothes. The room looked very clean and neat!

leftcoast, that makes me feel a bit better.

There are 3 guys in the room, so if everyone uses the floor for a closet, they will trip over each other. Should be interesting.

Those 3 guys will pick up the closest shirt to them and put it on, then the owner will comment, 'I have that same shirt'! At the end of the year each guy will bring home ~1/3 of the shirts that lived in the room.

I know that is why I don't recognize most of my son's clothes; he doesn't like to shop.

mominva, don't feel badly. My son came home with some shirts that I did not recognize. They were not his roommate's clothes. When he ran out of clean shirts (I sent him so, so, many shirts) he walked to Walmart (just off campus) and bought various ugly t-shirts bc they were cheap. It was probably easier in his mind than washing some clothes!  I tried to tell him that it is not necessary to dress himself in ugly tshirts with slogans like "cheetos", just bc he could buy them for $3 or less on clearance!

He very likely will pick up his roommates' shirts and wear them. This is very possible.
