D moves into her dorm on Tuesday. I have no idea if she's figured out the logistics of getting things out of her apartment (she's been up there all summer) or out of storage and into her dorm room, but I'm sure she'll work something out. Does that make me the anti-helicopter mom?
She's got a new roommate this year (who lived on her floor last year) and a bigger room. She'll be continuing to work the same work-study, which she did all summer, so I guess they like her/don't have any complaints. It's nice to know she's employable.

Well, maybe, firefly, but it definitely makes you a sensible mom.
Keep us posted on your D's move-in. We leave on Saturday.

Hi everyone I have been MIA because I don't chat when I am on vacation with my family.
Well Julia is moved in at Valpo we were able to get all of her belongings in 5 suitcases and a "Pack and hold " order at Bed Bath and Beyond. My older D and her boyfriend were with us (she is moving stuff back to So Cal from Northeastern for the fall--so we had her 4 bags in the rental car too We made a couple of runs to Target for cleaning supplies, munchies and to stock her with cold meds and tylenol. The move in was easy. Since she was from over 500 miles away she got to move in Fri night (official move in was Sat morning). The elevators were out but when we pulled up she saw a young man she had met here in So Cal at a Welcome picnic and he offered to help. She had met her roomate at an admitted students weekend so they had coordinated things to bring. We helped finish getting things together for her on Sat and ran errands for the girls which allowed her roomate's parents to head back to Chicago in terrible traffic. On Sat upper classmen were there to help Freshman move in which was very nice...and the there were Tech Support Kids in every dorm ready to help kids connect to the wireless Internet.
I know several of you live in the Midwest and even though I had been following the news about the storms nothing prepared me for the weather I experienced in Illinois and Indiana over the past week.
We were eating dinner at a quaint little place in Wilmington Ill when the tornado sirens went off. (we had no idea what the sound was) then we lost electricity. We ended up running back to the B&B and played cards using the emergency lights...we ate cheese and crackers that the owner of the B&B was able to locate via candle light... Then on our way to Valparaiso IN the next day we had to negotiate flooded roads.
and when we left my bubbly 18 year old in Valparaiso ...my H and I both shed tears.
and now my older D leaves for a semester in France in 5 days ...

S is just about ready to leave. I've been offline for several days taking care of some things at home and helping him get a few last minute items, details like locating a pharmacy near campus. It hasn't quite hit us yet that in a few days he'll be on campus. I think back to our uncertainty at this time last year when we were visiting a group of colleges that all seemed quite possible, yet not quite right. He didn't even find the school he will be attending until he visited it in the fall. It was on the list his counselor gave him in the spring, but we knew almost nothing about it. One reason why students should never make up their minds about their choices until they have explored all their options.
