Interestingly, Reed does seem to allow hot pots, but not microwaves. My son had a good laugh when I wondered what Reedies must have done with a microwave to get them banned.

We fly to the East coast on a Monday in August, shop for my Ds dorm on Tuesday and she is to be there on Wednesday. Everywhere it said for her not to buy much until she sees her room since they are all different shapes and sizes. My D found out from housing that Westcoasters are allowed into their dorm rooms the day before everyone else because of the distance. WHOO HOO! Now we can go there Tuesday, decide what she needs, go buy it for her and move her in on Wednesday with everyone else.
Thank you, Bryn Mawr.

| If you are traveling by car, think about packing in those extra large ziplock bags with handles. I've seen some coupons in the Sunday papers. I packed an entire season of clothing into one (she is 10 but they hold a lot!). They can be folded up and used again for laundry or storage under the bed. Less suitcases to travel with.

We have bought those gigantic ziplocks for holding sleeping bags and such. They're great! Obviously we can't travel by car as it is over 2500 miles away, but for those who can that's a great suggestion.

| Outwest...I should have clarified that post was meant to anyone. Imagine what it would cost you to drive 2500 miles these days!

They also sell travelling bags with one-way holes that allow you to squeeze out all the air. Target has them.

I saw the gigundo bags at the supermarket and was debating getting some ... now I definitely will ...
In my D's case, we'll be sending up boxes in advance that will be waiting for her in the dorm storage room when we get there but will also be bringing stuff up in the rented minivan (she has two guitars, a bass, a keyboard and stand and an amp so we CAN'T send that and it wouldn't fit in any of our cars so minivan rental it is) ... but will also bring bedding, etc. and the stuff she "needs" (or forgets to pack or buys) in the two weeks between sending up boxes and actually leaving here on August 30.
And same situation in that we don't know what the layout of her room will be (it could be two twins, bunk beds or a loft set up) so until we see the room, there will be things she can't buy (storage-wise) ... so leaving time on Tuesday when she's doing placement tests for us to go out and get whatever she needs before we leave.

We are planning on buying the bulk of my Ds stuff the day before she moves in. The one thing we have bought is those XL twin sheets. My D is a sheet snob and won't sleep on scratchy cheap sheets. We couldn't find anything but itchy polyester blend ones in the stores in XL. I think those manufacturers think young people don't need nice sheets! We found very nice 100% Egyptian cotton ones on line in the color she wanted.
She loves sociology and keeps thinking there HAS to be an unwritten social protocol for winter behavior, just like there is a beach etiquette. LOL Example: It is really bad to smash a sandcastle even if the people have gone home. The ocean has to take it away. In Germany she wore her coat inside and the family finally came out and asked her why she was doing that, was she planning on going out? My D was so embarrassed. She didn't know you are supposed to take the coat off and hang it up when you come in. She asked me if a person leaves their rainboots on in the house or takes them off. I said I thought you took them off in a 'mud room'. Then she wanted to know if the boots go over the shoes or in place of the shoes. And, if they are in place of the shoes then are you walking around barefoot in the house? Can you wear your gloves in the classroom? I told her she'd have to find out all that minute'.
By the way, My D decided she didn't want to see her dorm room the day before. She says there isn't anything urgent she will need and she wants to come at the same time as all the other students. So, in the crowd of people picking up their dorm keys first thing in the am you will see us.

| A funny story about vacuum sealed bags: When my daughter and I went to buy her quilt, which we planned to ship to her college, the one she picked out was in one of those vacuum sealed bags. I, of course, had to open the bag to feel the material, and WHOOSH! the bag started swelling immediately to enormous proportions right there in the aisle of Bed Bath and Beyond. My daughter was mortified as I madly tried to squish the quilt back into the bag, failing miserably. So, just a word to the wise, if you'll be shipping or packing something that comes in one of those bags, DO NOT OPEN IT until you get to your destination! LOL!

Another funny story: On the very first snow fall during her freshman year, my daughter and her friends went out to play in the snow. "Let's make snow angels!" one of her friends from Northern climes said. Down everyone went...but my dear So. Cal. native D. went down FACE FIRST into the snow to make hers! Of course, her friends from Northern climes found this hysterical and are still teasing her about it two years later.

For some reason the packing feels overwhelming. Maybe it's not the packing, but the whole event. We made a trip to Ikea for must-have bedding items (no Ikea where he's going). We'll take a duffel bag full this weekend when we go to orientation and store it with his sister, who lives nearby.
This all feels a little bit like getting ready for his birth and acquiring little Onesies and diapers and crib bedding. Before he was born, I'd waddle into his room and just sit in the rocker, trying to imagine what it would be like with a baby in the crib. I'm having an equally hard time visualizing him in his dorm room on his snazzy Ikea duvet cover.

ellenrch: I think you got it exactly right! I remember that feeling so well (particularly sitting in the rocker!), and now it is not only trying to picture him in his dorm, but to envision our house and daily life without him in it...
I have relied quite a lot on online shopping at bb&d, overstock.com and fun places like organizeit.com. All of the linen, and laundry hamper, bathroom tote stuff is sitting in my god daughters house, wating for our arrival. Also, a very warm coat from landsend! The online shopping has allowed me to spend a lot of time looking and deciding, without having to drag a reluctant guy-shopper through the stores. When I thought I found the best stuff, he would come in, look at the screen and say sure, thanks!
One thing I had a lot of trouble with, but think I have finally come up with a solution, is the mobile/cell phone. As we don't know much about US plans and didn't want to get stuck for 2 years with something that wasn't working, we will get him a prepaid plan; bring his own phone and after a couple of months he will have learned enough to decide if that is the best solution, or he wants to change it.
The nagging feeling remains: what have I forgotten?

expatdxb, if you've forgotten something, you can order it online and send it with a click! It's hard enough for me to imagine my S halfway across the country. Halfway around the world would be a challenge.
This isn't about the College Shopping List, but: Every time I feel like he's going far away, I remember that my grandparents, who worked abroad for an American company, sent my father (their only child) back to the States in the early 1940s to finish high school (he traveled with large, heavy trunks on an ocean liner!). My great-aunt was in charge, and they all coped, but the letters I have from that time show that it was wrenching for my grandparents. My father actually had a great time!

The quilt issue has been the hot button question here ...
For whatever reason, DD decided last week it was time to start shopping for college (though I have been picking stuff up here and there and using the guest room as a staging area) ...
We found out that contrary to the initial info on the school's website that students could send cartons in advance and they'd hold them there, the new rule is "you gotta bring it yourself" so those oversized ziplocks are primo!
We got sheets (nice and soft in the XL twin, the jersey material, from BB&B, one set in black and one set in white so she can mix and match) and all white towels (the really cheap but amazingly soft ones at Target that she LOVES) ... but she can't make a decision on her comforter. Have checked BB&B, Linens and Things, and just about every department store in the DC metro area as well as poring over the online shopping sites ... the Ikea suggestion is brilliant so we'll head out there one of these days ... she wants SOME color but not TOO MUCH color. Oy.
Holding off on certain items until she a) talks to her roommate (gets her assignment in mid-August which doesn't leave a lot of time before an August 30 departure) and b) they see the room and bathroom because layouts differ from room to room. (However a good friend of hers is at the five-week program there staying in what we THINK will be D's dorm, so once she gets her room number her friend will go and check out the room layout and send pictures via celphone!)
But with the new wrench of having to bring everything up with us, I think she'll pack more intelligently with regards to clothes (and put them all in those big plastic bags so no need to worry about storing luggage or breaking down boxes). I just have to make sure she brings enough hangers for everything that hangs up ... DID get two great sets of hanging shelves, one for all her hoodies (they'd take up every bit of drawer space otherwise) and one for shoes and stuff which has net-pockets on each side ...
I'm guessing the closet they share is a decent size since the dorm is a renovated hotel ... most hotel rooms seem to have sliding door double-wides, PLUS they have their own bathroom ... so they can figure out what to do about shower curtain, bath mats, etc. once they're there (and there IS an Ikea 16 miles away).
But her 18th birthday is two weeks after the first day of school and we'll be going back up to visit then (and driving) so anything she forgets or finds out she had room for after all we can bring up with us then ... I think in this case erring on the side of underpacking is the wise move.
She'll be going to the beach for a few days with her best friends and coming back August 8, then we're having a going away party August 11 ... our plan is to start packing after that.

| Check out JCPenny online. You can search in the bedding section by color, style, size etc. The prices are good too. Good luck!

| HijinksAndSue: another suggestion: consider getting her a plain duvet and 1 or 2 duvet covers that can be different colors and easily washed. check http://www.overstock.com

I strongly urged the duvet/cover because of exactly that ... washability ... but several years ago she had a duvet/cover and the quilt never quite fit, always bunched up and was a pain in the you-know-what so she was just deadset against it ...
However she bought one today online for $19.99 (I am sure it will be top quality LOL) but it IS really great looking and if she hates it, well, it was only $19.99.
It was actually the one I thought was the best looking as well ...

| JC Penney is great. DD looked for what she wanted online. She sent the info to me here (we had some gift cards). I ordered what she wanted (which coincidentally was from the outlet) and it was shipped to her door. I ordered it on Saturday and she received it on Tuesday. Not bad!! And it was exactly what she wanted. Also, check the codes on the website. They often have free shipping if the order is more than $50. You just have to enter the code.

Ikea has a good selection of duvets and covers. If you by one that is substantial it won't squish down and have lumps in it. We got a comforter and a lap blanket to use when studying or watching TV so a big, puffy comforter was a good idea.
