| Both of my kids had under bed storage boxes. For the kid we drove, they were the rubbermaid ones with wheels. For the kid who flew, we had collapsible canvas ones. NOW...those were truly a waste of money. She actually put her suitcases under the bed and used those for extra storage. They fit just fine, and they had to go somewhere!! I second the rolling duffle. DS used his to cart his laundry up and down. Re: lamps....both of my kids had those clip on lamps, they look like desk lamps but instead of having a base, they clip onto the headboard of the bed, or side of a bookcase. Medical box of OTC drugs and bandaids!! DD has a Swiffer and for her tile dorm floor it's a great thing (note...she is a neat nook). A fan (unless you have AC). Re: sheets, in both kids' cases we found that the regular twin jersey knit sheets were perfect on an X-long twin bed even with mattress pad and foam thing. The jersey knit just stretches smoothly over everything very nicely. Duct Tape is an absolute.

An Aside to Carolyn: If you ever decide to put ads on this site, you might want to talk to the makers of duct tape first. Good for both before college (for parents) or during (students.)Last edited on Sat May 5th, 2007 02:37 am by binx

| The post above reminded me, son bought a extra large swifter-he used it often but never in the corners of the room or under the bed.

Should I send DS with sticky traps?
this was in the St Stephens Street Apt/Dorms. She was on the 3rd floor. If DS is in the newer buildings he should be fine...
don't worry about the sticky tape traps Izzy said the RAs have supplies

I looked at my son's room request for Carnegie Mellon. They ask how often you will clean up the room. Daily, weekly, monthly, never. He'd originally circled monthly then erased it and circled never.
I never saw a duvet cover in a German hotel that looked less than spotless. Ordung muss sein!

Great lists. The only thing I remember making a big deal out of was high quality sheets. The super soft 100% cotton ones and a feather pillow. Those were our splurge and both my older two loved those sheets. I remember them both saying a lot of their friends had bought those scratchy/sweaty dorm room polyester ones.
Other then that, #1 loved her little electric tea pot. You can heat up water for a can of soup in a mug or those disgusting cup o noodles or a cup of hot tea or hot chocolate late at night.
The other thing that came in REALLY handy was a folding TV tray. I remember #1 had tea cups for friends and her electric tea pot on it.
Rolls of quarter if their college laundry uses quarters.

Outwest, I LOVE the idea of the folding TV table! That is a great idea. The rolls of quarters also are much appreciated for vending machines. My mother in law gave my daughter two rolls of quarters as part of her graduation gift, and actually mailed her another roll halfway through the year when she said the first two were gone.
My husband has arrived to help my daughter get all of her stuff packed and moved into storage. From the sound of his voice when he called from her room this morning, it's a very good thing that he decided to go help her!
She finished her last final at 10 pm last night (!) so she is now officially a college sophomore!

It's great of him to help. I well recall how exhausted I was at the end of the finals and the school year. We put most of our stuff into storage, but nobody got much sleep before we would set off for our 1000 mile drive home, typically with a group of 3 or 4 of us in one car. We would do this in 17 hours or so, non-stop and switching drivers every two hours. I tended to get the "graveyard" shift from about 4 AM to 6 AM as we were driving down old US 99 (now displaced by I-5) through Bakersfield to L.A. It's a wonder really that we accomplished this without any accidents.

Mackinaw, Ah, memories. Isn't it amazing how much energy we had back then?
My daughter IS really exhausted from this semester, so I am sure my husband's helping hands will come in handy. Just taking down all of the stuff she has plastered on her door and wall will take some time. It's a shame she can't just leave it all, as she will be in the same room next year.

| One thing about the quarters - check with Res Life if you really need them. My d's school has vending machines & washers & dryers that use their IDs with stored money on them, rather than quarters. Since they have to have those IDs with them anyway (it gets them into the dorms), it saves time & wear & tear.

| We just got a letter and flyer from Carleton with linens guaranteed to fit the dorms' mattresses. Has anyone used this kind of service before (rhl.com)?

Bringing this back up again, is there a complete list anywhere of everything they can possibly need? Mine is going to need to do some serious shopping soon. Do the stores sell out early?

Hi I have been out of touch recently--working a job this summer without computer access has been depressing
My D has been shopping and comparing what she needs/wants with her roomate. Our experience trying to purchase things "move-in weekend" in Boston a couple of years ago was that Bed Bath and Beyond and the Target nearest to Northeastern was really picked over. This year we are going shopping at our nearest Bed Bath and Beyond and picking up what she wants at the store in Valparasio.
Valpo sent the students a list of suggested bedding, desk supplies etc. I made her a quilt out of her t-shirts and pillow cases to match. My girl is a girly girl so she added a lighted make-up mirror to the list, we hit the Container Store and Ikea on the Back to College Sales nights for closet storage.
don't forget desk supples like paper clips my older D said she was so happy she had a stapler, tape (duct tape of course), paperclips and a pencil sharpener.

I didn't think about the stores near the colleges being picked over. Mine was going to go on his own, but we were out today and I decided to swing by BB&B. I'm glad we did, because they had NO bedding in guy's colors. Everything in X-long twin was pink or some other color he would never use. We ended up finding a better selection at Target, although that was picked over, too, and their supply of sheets was limited, so we went back to the other store and filled in. There is still so much else left to buy, most of which he thinks he doesn't want, like the first-aid kit, sewing kit, and toolbox.
He doesn't find out his roommate or dorm for another few weeks. Because the dorms are different sizes and layouts, he can't get any storage items, even a lamp, until he knows just which size room he will have.

Okay everyone. Gap year is off. After a month away he doesn't want to leave the girlfriend and go to South America for 3 months. He actually gave his spot on his trip up to someone who probably wants it more then he does. He has agreed to go to college in the fall. I vetoed staying home. So we have 3 weeks to figure out what he needs and buy it on top of getting all the paperwork into the college. The school has been wonderful working with us getting everything in place.
What are the absolute essentials? I have a feeling it is all going to fall on me since my son thinks all he needs is a sheet, computer and maybe a printer and his clothes. He doesn't even care what anything looks like. He would take the oldest ragged towels if we sent them. BOYS.

Oh boy Mom61, you've got to kick it into high gear now! Remind me again, what school will he be attending?
And is there an IKEA nearby?
Your son's idea of furnishing a dorm room sounds about like what my son would say.

He is going to University of the Pacific. I imagine they have almost every big store up there. I live in a college town so we do have BB%B and Linens and things. Plus our Costco does a big dorm area but since UCSB starts late in Sept they don't have much out yet. I think he moves in Aug 22nd for orientation. Got the room assignment today but no roommate info. He is a B so I am assuming it is a double room.
I wish Target was closer. We live 45 minutes each way from low price shopping. No way is sonny boy driving that far to shop.
I am still in denial!
How many kids actually use the refrigerator? It looks like at his school they don't rent them. At my D's school they were included in the room free of charge.
How about bikes?

Mom61, I initially pooh-poohed the idea of a fridge (after all, in MY day...), but when her roomie got one for Christmas, I finally saw the wisdom of having one. My daughter kept it stocked with milk, healthy snacks, and fruit as a way to overcome the temptation/convenience of buying junk at one of the on-campus fast food places. In the winter, she relied on her groceries for breakfast, rather than getting out of her warm bed to head to the dining hall. Of course, back in MY day, I did rent a fridge my senior year, but that was just to keep the beer cold...not that my daughter necessarily has to know that.
Once your son finds out who is roomie is, I'm sure this is something they can coordinate; even boys like to know who's bringing what!

I have a detailed list that I found, but mine isn't interested in taking that much with him. Taking out most of what is on the list I have, basically, to start they need sheets (usually Twin XL, but check), blanket, comforter or bedspread, pillows, pillowcases, towels, a lamp, some desk/school supplies, computer, alarm clock or clock radio unless they can get up without one, shower shoes, clothes, laundry soap and toiletries. Once they realize they can't just run into the kitchen or bathroom to get whatever you keep at home, they will want to purchase whatever they need. There is a large KMart near UoP.
