Carolyn,
Thank you for this blog post about Lynn O'Shaughnessy's book. I'm going to forward it to people who are about to face the how-to-pay-for-college dilemma. I find that I am quiet in public about our family decision to put an upper limit on college costs. In some circles (and I am not exaggerating), parents equate this decision with not caring enough about one's child's education or not being willing to make the necessary sacrifices to pay for the "best" college. So I go back and forth: still a little self-conscious because we're following a different drummer, but very pleased that the tuition bill is within our means and doesn't require that we/he take out loans or that we sacrifice assets intended to help support us in retirement (which for us is just around the corner).

Thanks, Ellen.  Lynn is a personal friend of mine --- in fact, I wrote the introduction to her book. :)  She has written several books on financial planning, and I like how she explains college financing in a straight forward way. More importantly, she encourages families to march to a different drummer and consider a wide range of options, instead of just focusing in on the usual name brand schools.
