How much do you know about higher education in the U.S.? I've put together a quiz based on information from the Chronicle of Higher Education's annual Almanac. The person with the highest score (be honest) will be crowned :dude: for the day.

Take the quiz here

I did lousy. But to be fair, there were several disconnects between the answer and the explanation:

1. What is the national graduation rate at four-year colleges (both public and private) in the U.S.? a. 85% b. 40% c. 56% d. 70% The answer is d. Fifty-six percent of students who enroll in college receive their degrees.
Is it D or is is 56%?

2. What percentage of adults in the U.S. have a Bachelor’s degree or higher? a. 50% b. 27% d. 65% e. 43% The answer is d, 27%. 17.2% of adults in the U.S. hold Bachelor’s degrees, 6.9% have Master’s degrees, 1.1% have Doctoral degrees, and 2.0% hold advanced professional degrees.
Ditto

5. What is the national average for tuition (not including room and board) at public institutions? a. $3,500 b. $5,351 c. $8,500 d. $12,344 The answer is c. The national average for tuition at public institutions is $5,351.
Ditto

Still, my score was abysmal.

The best question was the one about how many kids get into their first or second choice school.

Praying S is part of that 90%.

Sorry guys. I accidentally deleted sections and had to retype and in the process some of my answer letters got spun around. Consolation is right - 90% reported they were attending their first or second choice school, with 67% saying they were at their first choice. I have since corrected the other problems as well. National graduation rate is 56%, percentage holding bachelors or higher is 27%.

Thanks to Patsmom for alerting me. She and Lderochi get the :dude: for being alert enough to spot the errors. (I could say I put them in there just to see if you guys were paying attention...:P)

What surprised me was the relatively small difference between kids getting financial aid at different family income levels.

That really was shocking.

I loved that the majority of kids said they were going to college to learn more about things that interest them. A good reason to go, IMHO.

I got the 56% answer, but I sure didn't get the 27% one. Yikes. Of course, that wasn't the only one I missed.:?

Okay, I got 9 right.  Did I win?  :P

If we count the ones where I got the next closest, I didn't do too bad.  Still, I'm glad my score doesn't go on any official transcripts.

I got 11 right, but a few of these were WAGs.

One of the ones I missed was the one about the largest enrollment.  I have a question about that one, though.  Is this on-campus enrollment at the main campus, or does it included satellite campuses and extension?  Often the big state universities have two different figures.

Mackinaw, They didn't specify, but I suspect the numbers are just for the main campus. For ASU, it clearly specified "Tempe Campus" so I don't think their smaller second campus, ASU West, in Phoenix, was included.
