Six very smart rising college freshman kindly took the time to write up their advice for next year's seniors about dealing with admissions stress, writing essays, and picking colleges -- They did an outstanding job, and I hope you'll share their advice with your kids:
Advice for this year's seniors from last year's seniors

Excellent information straight from the horse's mouth. I particularly enjoyed the ode to Columbia LOL. I think hearing this information from other students will go over better than hearing it from Mom

This is classic:
It really, really, really is 100% okay to go to a teeny school nobody has ever heard of. Think of it like being a fan of an awesome band that nobody knows. YOU know you have good taste, and it doesn't matter if anybody else recognizes it or not.

I also loved that comment, Binx, especially as the young lady who said it is headed to what I consider one of the finest colleges in the U.S but that many folks probably would say they've never heard of. Last edited on Wed Jul 4th, 2007 05:27 am by CarolynLawrence

Great advice. Apply early where you can and where it makes sense, be organized, and remain as stress free as possible. You told me everything will look different to them when they have their admissions offers in hand. That is true. I can't even remember being stressed now that it's behind us. (I was, though, I was).

You? Stressed? Nahhhhhhhhhh.
Helping your kids through the college application process is a lot like labor and childbirth. When you're going through it, there's lots of pain and sweat and fear. When it's over, you forget the worst parts because the end result is so good. Last edited on Wed Jul 4th, 2007 05:31 am by CarolynLawrence

Yes, Carolyn, an excellent analogy. And, like childbirth, this amnesic quality helps us to go through that process again with subsequent children!

Well, since I managed to post that last reply twice, I'll change the second one to something different (more coffee is definitely in order).
I like the comment about it being okay to go to a school no one's heard of (we've definitely had that experience with S's choice).
I hadn't really thought about the opposite end of that, such as what Harvard students or graduates refer to as "the H bomb," where your school is so well-known and prestigious that it carries all sorts of baggage with it.
