| In my blog post today, I gave some suggestions for doing research on specific majors. I included a few links, but if anyone else wants to share a useful link or two, please feel free! Last edited on Thu May 24th, 2007 02:47 am by CarolynLawrence

This is all new info to me. I had no idea that collegeboard even had the major profiles. I just read through a few and it is really interesting.
We certainly did this type of thing when looking at music schools for my middle child - how strong is the program, how successful are the graduates, what components should a strong program have. But we did it to a much lesser degree with the other two. With the oldest, I'll blame it on our complete green-ness about the whole college process. We did look hard at economics in general - can you get a job? What can you do with it? But did not apply it to any individual school.
Your last comment, about changing majors, was one of the main influences for our D's final decision. She has much less focus than her brothers - it didn't make sense to base her entire college education on her vague current interests. One of my ongoing concerns is that we have chosen a school with lots of majors, but I know very little about the departments she is interested in. Miami U is known for things like business and architecture. But she's interested in music, and languages! We will be learning the hard way.
Since music is the only subject we explored in depth in advance, here are a few useful links:

Binx,
Thank you so much for sharing those links! My son won't be majoring in music, but his music is a very important part of his life, and I've been a bit stumped about what questions to ask as we make the rounds of colleges. Some of the links you gave look like they'll be good places to learn more so I appreciate it!

I know that some fields have professional organizations geared to teachers -- for example, my daughter was interested in studying Russian, and the American Association of Teachers of Slavic Languages has a web site at http://aatseel.org/ that has useful information and links, including an enrollment survey of various colleges and universities at http://aatseel.org/databases/enrollment-survey.html that was useful for us in pinpointing colleges where my daughter's interest would be most appreciated, while at the same time avoiding those where there didn't seem to be a critical mass of interested students.
Other fields have this too -- I found this stuff by simply Googling words like "enrollment" or "college" or "university" or "major" in combination with "russian" or "slavic".
