Binx, Furman has used "professional judgment" to make some changes to your FAFSA, apparently by making changes to treat non-recurring income as an asset rather than income. Yes, they can do this, and no it will not necessarily go to other schools -- so you may want to contact Miami and inform them of the changes. Since the aid is already better at Miami, it may or may not make a difference.
You can find a lot of good information out professional judgment here:

Also, check the thread I started last September called "Great Financial Aid Resource" here:

Here is an interesting article about how one school, MIT, figures out financial aid for students whose parents are divorced. I'm not sure if this is typical of other schools.
MIT admissions officers have blogs, and so does this guy from Financial Aid.
He gets my personal little award for creative blog entry title, "It's Not Apparent Who is a Parent."

Thanks for the link, Leftcoast. I missed it first time around, since H deals with all the money stuff (since so much of it is in a language I don't speak.) It does sound like professional judgment is what happened.
Miami U actually requested our extra info awhile ago. We sent them the whole packet even before we sent it to Furman, but haven't heard their response yet. Our most recent aid statement from them, that came this week, had an asterisk on it, indicating that our file was under review. According to Carolyn (on the thread you linked to), state schools are less likely to adjust the numbers. I think the most we might expect is a change to subsized loans.
I'm going to start a decision thread. Please look for it, and offer insight! I've resisted starting a personal thread so far, choosing to glean from others' experiences instead. But I am so afraid I'm missing something!

| Got a letter from Miami yesterday -- asking for MORE information. Does it ever end?

Well, eventually your kid will graduate.
When my son decided to leave his first college, I have to admit that there was a little part of me that was tremendously relieved that I didn't have to be dealing with the financial aid department any more. Especially the following year when I realized that I could buy a used car AND send my daughter overseas, TWICE, for less than what my EFC would have been if he had stayed in school.
I mean its a lot of struggle and hassle and I am still left paying out a LOT of money, even if it is at a big discount over what most others pay.

Yeah, I feel your pain. We still have $35k from S1, who graduated two years ago (and has his own loans.)
I realized that I said here I was going to start a decision thread to solicit help. I actually did - had it all typed up, and decided not to post. It is actually the typing part that is useful to me - making me put all my thoughts down in a logical order. I even read through Carolyn's blog again. But the bottom line in this case is deciding how much those intangibles between schools is worth to us, and nobody else can really help. It's not even really our D's decision at this point. I wanted help because my thoughts were so scrambled, I was afraid I was missing something important.
We haven't sent in the deposit yet - perhaps tonight? - but barring any late hour lottery wins (although they say you have to play to win) or other miracles, she will be attending Miami-Ohio in the fall. She seems to be getting excited about it. Told me yesterday that she thinks there are a number advantages to attending a larger school. It helps when people say to her, "Oh, Miami's a great school!" I decided that, from now on, when a young person tells me where they're going to school, that's what I'm going to say! It's so encouraging to hear.
