| University of Southern CA gives 1/2 tuition + eligibility for additional merit $ up to $2500/year for NMFs. Santa Clara U & Boston U also often give merit money but don't explicitly PROMISE to all NMFs.

Yahoo! My little guy, who has been somewhat in the shadow of his sister, oh she who ate high school alive and now goes to Princeton, just got his PSATs back. He did great, 229, math perfect except one problem omitted for a 76, a 78 in CR and 75 in CW. But what's most important is, he did better than his sister . Now his A-s feel a little better to him...and, frankly, his overly-obsessed mom.
Note - his prep was the famous Xiggi method......on an airplane trip of 5 hours . Thanks Xiggi!!!

Alumother,
Congratulations to your son! That is terrific news. I am still waiting anxiously for my son's PSAT scores. It would be nice if the kids didn't have to wait on their schools to give them out!

| My kid's HS gave the scores out shortly after they received them in late Nov/early Dec. Unfortunately, my D didn't do great in the writing portion (never learned grammar), so she won't make commended. I told her she still did great, but she's disappointed. I'm glad their HS doesn't keep the kids in suspense longer than necessary.

Word is we'll get the PSAT scores after the holiday break (she goes back Jan. 2) ... not expecting a whole lot but hoping it will give her some idea of what she needs to work on for SATs (taking them in May after taking Princeton Review course to lead up to it) ... her sophomore numbers were 60 M, 61 V, 62 W ... she thinks she did worse in math this time around because when she took it last year she was in Algebra II and says that she hadn't realized how much she'd forgotten.
She's definitely an anti-mathlete LOL ... although she is acing pre-calc this semester so far ... but she won't be taking the second semester of pre-calc because of a scheduling conflict. She'll finish her math requirements first semester senior year with consumer math ...
Ironically, her first choice college (by a wide margin) is SAT optional, but we figure it would still be nice for her to do well for two reasons. One, if she DOES have good scores, she can submit them and maybe it will make her a more overall appealing candidate and help her chances at some financial help. Two, if she decides that she wants to transfer to a straight liberal arts college, I'm guessing she'll need the SATs, etc.
No ACT and no SAT IIs though ... for whatever reason her school doesn't push them ... just APs and IB (she's taking three AP classes this year and her school is one of two in the county with an IB program ... though she's not in it, she is taking one of the classes).
At this point, her plan is to apply early action (Nov. 1 deadline) to her first choice and cross her fingers that that math issue will not be a problem (she'd be studying music, no math requirements).

Might as well jump in here since daughter is a junior and also received PSAT scores this week. Overall, she did well with 670 CrR, 690 Math and 800 writing. As that is the only step she has really taken in the college process, we have no other "news" to report. She has not visited a college campus nor knows the name of a single college she would like to attend!
After the holiday break, the guidance counselors spend January and February with small groups of juniors, exploring post high school options, which, for most (95% or so) is college. Hopefully, during those months, she'll begin to get an idea of what she wants in a college, what she would like to study and where she will be happiest and most successful. She is one of those kids who will have many options, which may make things all the more difficult. This will be a very interesting journey to see where she ends up.
Glad to know there is a place for us junior parents to meet!

I am so jealous of everyone that has heard their kids' scores. Son's school still hasn't handed them out.
He did, however, give me his tenative list of colleges he wants to visit this morning. Unfortunately, out of the 8 schools, only two are realistic matches/safe bets for him.

I have no idea when we will receive the results of the PSAT. I do know that the school does not release them until after finals which are this upcoming week. The school does not prep for PSAT at all and I think my son had an important XC race and about four hours sleep before taking it

LOL! I can't believe you are in this predicament too Carolyn. Well actually I can. My son also has a very high opinion of his HS achievements and is not realistic about his college chances. He thinks because he's worked his hardest that he is a shoe in at wherever he wants to go. That used to be true but as we know now, not anymore

| My D has no interest in thinking or looking at Us at this point. We'll see how she feels as the year progresses. She's finding junior year challenging enough without adding more stress.

I had really been hoping we'd know the scores by now and in fact wouldn't even have known they weren't going to release them till after vacation if I hadn't checked out the guidance link on her school's website ... she had no clue and apparently couldn't care less ... grrrrrr ...
Frankly I don't have high hopes for these scores LOL ... if any of them are 600 or over I'll be ecstatic ...
Her feeling is she knows she won't qualify for NMS so why does it matter? But I think it gives a pretty decent indication of what she needs to work on for SATs (my SATs were exactly 10 points higher than my PSATs in both Math and Verbal ... I only took them once, no prep classes or anything, because I was accepted to my first choice college at my interview in the late spring of my junior year and they were fine with my scores ... guess that doesn't happen much anymore LOL).
HUGE CONGRATS to everyone here whose kids did so well ... that must be a nice feeling of relief and comfort, knowing one hurdle on those apps is going to look damn sweet

Fiddlekid's PSATs came in last week: 71 Cr, 61 M, 71W. She's decided to take the January SATs and has now mapped out a study plan for math prep over the Christmas break....
I've noticed this college process is starting to get more "real" for her...not a bad thing! Two fat questionnaires came home last week from the school's college counseling office -- one for her to fill out, one for parents. And our first orientation/info meeting "Junior Night" is mid-January, with family meetings scheduled right after that.
She's got auditions for summer music programs in Jan and Feb and we are planning a college visit road trip for March...it's all going so fast, it feels like the future is almost here!

I think for those of us who feel as if our kids are "disinterested" in the college process, it is important to remember that college visits and research will have more meaning to the kids once they start the process at their own high schools, at least that's what her guidance counselor told me!! Sometimes it is easier for an "outside source' to begin the process and then to have the parents sort of "piggy back" what the kids have been learning about and doing in school. The meetings at school can become a jump start to conversations at home. At least that is what I am counting on!
At this point, like some others, my D is completely clueless about college. We are here in the east and live in a rather "high pressure area" when it comes to admissions and the like. I am hoping that she will not "succumb" to the overall emphasis on "brand name" and will continue to follow her independant way of thinking and doing things, which has served her well in the past. She wouldn't know the difference between Harvard and Hobart, but, hopefully, in time, will be able to describe the type of college experience she would enjoy and find challenging. Then we can begin to sort through the school and look for the right fit.
A bit about her: She is a very good student and has taken all honors and AP's throughout high school. GPA is 4.5 weighted. She is also a musician. She plays flute (Regional/All-State), jazz alto sax, sings Alto (Regional/All-State/All-East), and is the Drum Major for the marching band and student director of an after school ensemble. Most, if not all, of her EC's are music and theater-related. Even her community service is, mostly, music/theater related, as in performing at hospitals, nursing homes, community events, etc.
Interesting thing is that, according to her, she will not be going into music and it will remain an avocation for her. She may end up teaching (college professor, she says), but it won't be music. Her other school interests are: English language and literature, Math, poetry and creative writing, and journalism. With the high PSAT on the writing section (800) I am going to guess that she will end up in English and/or writing. What she will write about, however, is up in the air!!!
So, who knows where this path will lead? The fun is about to begin!!
Good Luck to all the junior parents! This Spring will be most interesting.

KatsMom, sounds like our daughters have a lot in common (well, except that I doubt mine will do quite as well on the PSATS LOL) ... from the "high pressure east coast" location to the very similar ECs ... we're in MoCo, Maryland ...
One difference, however, is that my daughter is definitely planning on pursuing a music career (she does musical theatre/forensics as an EC but doesn't plan on going that direction after HS) ...
Her niche is rock/pop/indie, so that really narrows down the college situation at first glance ... she VERY much wants to go to Berklee College of Music to major in songwriting and if she doesn't get in there EA then she'll move on to other Plan B options (going to an LAC near enough to a city that she can still gig regularly) ...
One downside (though it could also be an upside) is that a summer 2007 music program isn't an option for now because she plays in a rock band that may be touring this summer ... so all three members had to forego committing to the usual summer programs/jobs while this is in the planning stages. She had really wanted to go to Berklee's 5-week program (though honestly my bank account is breathing a sigh of relief LOL) ...
The upside is if they DO go on tour and have success, it would be a pretty good EC to have on the application ...

Anyone else having problems registering for the SAT?
The site warns that it may not work unless I upgrade to Internet Explorer . . . whatever . . . 5? 7? . . .anyway , my computer can't deal with it, we tried and it wouldn't start the next day. So, I can't get very far into the registration process with College Board. It just comes up with a blank screen after I input the ss#. I've tried it on my son's whiz-bang laptop with Firefox, and it doesn't work there either. Next options are my daughter's laptop and the public library. Final option is doing it on my husband's computer, but then he might go out and buy me a new one just so I won't have this problem again! So is calling the CB an option at all?

| Another option would be a trusty old paper app/registration for SAT. The HSs in your area should have them available if you stop by one. Ours is open some hours even over the Christmas break, as are many schools.

We just got my daughter's PSAT scores in the mail from her school. She had done extremely well as a sophomore, so I was a little concerned that she might not do as well this year - not to worry, she only missed one question this time. It's nice to have that milestone out of the way. It also means that there's no particular reason to wait to sign up for the SATs, at least SAT I.
I still can't get her very focussed on the college search. She's a perfectionist at a private school, so school is very intense for her. My hope is to get her started on the search process sooner rather than later, since next fall could be pretty hectic.
