We hit the send button twice today - Caltech and MIT. There comes a time you just need to declare the durned thing done. Now it has happened, I feel like we should have had another gazillion read throughs.
I am the only one who feels weird after the send button was hit?
Now he is going to take a couple of weeks off. We decided he should apply to some UCs because he doesnt really have a safety. The UC essays will be recycled from the Caltech and MIT essays. That will be easy. In a couple of weeks he will do that, then start working on Princeton and Stanford, just in case he gets deferred from Caltech and MIT.
I sure hope he gets an EA from Caltech!!

Good luck to your son, lfm!
My son finished up his essays and the CA is ready to go, but he said he wants to wait on sending it for a week. I think, as you suggest, it feels like such a monumental thing to him that he's afraid to let it go because then....well, then it's done.
Hope it goes out soon, though, as I am ready to move on to other things.

| Ya hit the send button and it's like roulette -- the ball and wheel are in motion and there is nothing you can do to change the outcome. Only in this case the wheel spins for . . . how long? Three months?

S made huge progress.
Three days off from school this week.
Last night he told me he had written down a list of all the essays he has to write. Oh but not the UCs.
You might just have to know him to understand why I am smiling...

A list is a good start! I remember that well. Mine took weeks writing that list.

My son finally hit the submit button yesterday, a week before the deadline. This was a long and somewhat painful labor but he made it and he was happy! I am not sure his essays are outstanding but he really does not like talking about himself, that's his personality. Now he can get a short break before moving on to the next application in November! Fortunately, he'll be done with cross-country by then and will have more time to work on it after school.

Congratulations, riviera! You must be relieved. I just found out that my S actually wrote one of his essays for a class--bless those teachers! I'm going to take them some truffles next week!!--and only has to trim it. Now if he can finish the other one, which he actually had done a semi-draft of, he may actually make the deadline and do so in good shape. After reaching anxiety overload last weekend, I had actually managed to remain in a Zen state, fully duct-taped, for much of the week. (Of course, if he had TOLD me that he had written the essay for class, rather than simply saying mysteriously that "it would be all right," he might have saved me much agita. Boys. Ya gotta love 'em. )
He also decided this week that he wants to send a recording after all.

| DS got one application out last week, and will get 2 more out in the next few days. He also got 2 scholarship apps done (I believe) se he is making slow progress. This weekend is homecoming, so he will be taking abit of a breather. Soon this will all be done but the waiting....

My son sent the Common App to all of his schools on Sunday, the night before the fire started.
He actually managed to do a little work on his supplements while we were in nomadic mode this week, and he hopes to have everything sent by Thanksgiving, which is probably a very realistic goal.
I have been pleasantly surprised by how independent and motivated he's been about the whole thing. He's taken care of business without much nagging from me, and, from what I've seen, his essays and applications have looked pretty good. It's been a different ride then it was with my daughter two years ago, where there was a whole lot of pushing and procrastination. I think both my son and I learned from watching her application experience.

Carolyn and all other California residents: I've been thinking about you and hoping you were out of the path of these fires. The thoughts of all us across the country are with you.

....he may have learned from his sister's experience but as a parent I know that I learned a great deal about my girls when they were applying to college. D1 did it all herself and we never saw anything until she needed $$. Her grades and scores were incredible and little direction was necessary. D2 needed more support because she was looking for different things in a school and her grades were solid Bs/B+s and average SATs. She asked for help in researching schools but hands off when it came to reviewing essays (Dad did that I kept my duct tape on tight) Their personalities were well reflected in their college application process...
so happy to hear that your son sent out the CA before the Harris fire shifted your way....and how great he remained focused during the evacuation...

D hit submit on her MIT EA application tonight! She also survived an alumni interview last weekend. I have no idea what they will think of her, but I think the application did reflect who she is, so what more can you ask?
All the reference forms, transcripts, scores, etc. for the rest of her applications have been requested. She got her ELC number (a UC thing for those not in CA) from the counselor last week so is guaranteed admissions to UCSB if she wants (which she doesn't, but still it's nice to know).
Big steps!

Good luck to your daughter Revkat! My son is slowly working his way through the supplements, having an easy time with some of them, harder time with others (mainly the schools he cares most about). He admitted the other night that he's feeling just a wee bit anxious at this point. Thank heavens! I was started to get unnerved by his seeming lack of nerves.

My son got his ED into NYU right in under the wire. He kept delaying sending it thinking he would want to keep tweeking it. I didn't get too worried though, I figured if he wanted it bad enough he'd get it in. Besides it's an uber reach for him so if he didn't get it in I might have been secretly relieved.
Yesterday he was in a great mood and today after a hard math test he is positive he's not getting into any college Ah the mood swings!

Finally, one application finished and submitted. It's to our state U, which should be a safety (unless something went wrong, like his essays didn't get uploaded correctly). It is also, fortunately, a school at which I believe he would be extremely happy (as well as a financial safety). Really the only problem with going there would be if it meant he got rejected everywhere else.
I had started to get really anxious a few weeks ago, when I started seeing posts about students who had not only figured out where they wanted to apply but had already finished applying. I feel a little better now with the one application finished, but my S still doesn't have his list finalized. There's too much going on with school soccer and a busy senior schedule to worry about it right now, so he'll probably just put it off for three weeks and ruin Thanksgiving. Now just to make sure my excess anxiety doesn't get to him . . . .

Aaargh.
Still no applications done! One essay begun. Another subject thought of. Procrastinator son and Plannerina mom. Aaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeee.
UCal applications due Nov. 30. At least he entered some data. Dear god. This child was born in only 4 hours of labor. No drugs. Painful but short. Which is better, 4 hours of labor or months and months and months of college applications.
He is lucky he is cute.

Alumother - You and your son are not alone. I've got a cute procrastinator here on the east coast ( -- extremely short labor, too. hmmmmm, correlation??). Probably best that you don't tell your son that anyone else is on the same schedule he is. The only reason my son got his state U application in by November 1st is that it was due that day.
What we're facing now is a rather long list of schools that he intends to apply to. I suspect that he'll run out of time and won't actually get around to applying to all of them, and perhaps that's not such a bad thing. He was having a time trying to winnow his list of 15 schools -- each of which offered something he thought he would like. Maybe running out of time will be as good a method as any for getting the list to a more manageable length. It's just so hard to know which ones to cut out. I remember after all of my daughter's acceptances were in, she said if she'd have known she'd get into so many, she wouldn't have applied to half of them. Problem is you just don't know. Other problem we're facing now is a high anxiety mom.

Just about the exact same situation here: S has applied to one place, only because the deadline was 11/1. No other essays begun, as far as I know. 3 of his next group of favorites don't take the Common App, so there's lots of work to do. We've had his transcripts sent to 11 more schools that he claims to have an interest in applying to, just in case, although only 1 is a safety and I really doubt he will complete all those apps at this rate. I guess we'll proceed to have his SATs sent, just in case. There's a limit to how long you can wait! I hold out some faint hope that he will get into the early school and in doing so put me out of my misery.
Oh, and my procrastinator was a long labor that started on in the wee hours of the due date but finished the next day, so much for that theory!

Anyone else relieved that all testing is done? Son has ED and EA in and is working on the Common App supplements now. All his schools are Common App except for USC, which seems incredibly complicated compared to the Common App schools
