D was in a single in Bloomberg for 2 years. It was lap of luxury. Now she is in for a shock of normal college rooming this year:). What dorm is your son in?

LOL!! Son received a letter today (addressed to him & his parents) from his HS guidance counselor, reminding all seniors to do their "homework" over the summer - getting started on applications and writing essays!

She offered herself and some of the English teachers to help proof their essay's (my italics, her apostrophe). She made that same mistake twice in the letter, plus another error. Son is in Missouri right now; just visited Mizzou and is on his way to Indiana University. I wrote him a little note on the letter that he probably shouldn't let the GC proofread his essays! :P

My daughter will have an atypical senior year. After 2 years away for ballet, she decided to move back home and drop back signficantly on the dance hours. It will give her time for other things- including volunteer work. She has decided not to return to the public HS, but will continue cyberschooling and take a class (or two) at the local (Ivy) U, assuming she is accepted into their HS program. No senior pictures, quite probably no prom (altho she does have a small cadre of friends), graduation etc. She doesn't appear to have regrets at this point, and is looking forward to moving on.

Dufay, How nice to hear the update on  your daughter. I know she thought long and hard about her decision - I'm sure you will also enjoy having her home for a while. :)

Hummingbird, Your post about the letter from the GC cracked me up. First, I was laughing about the idea of my son actually doing "college homework" this summer (So NOT going to happen!), but your comment on the letter about maybe not letting her proofread made me laugh as well!

Alumother, I'd rather not say which dorm my son is in publicly. Let's just say it's one that looks like a castle with separate entries, lots of private rooms, and lots of atmosphere. My son's only complaint is that there isn't a lounge or common room of some sort. But, yes, I think he'll be spoiled after this summer when he looks at the dorms at other schools. :)

Sorry Caroline, not trying to "out" him:). Looks like a castle, huh? Well that describes what, 70% of the dorms at Princeton? Hehe. I am just glad to hear he's having fun.

Heh heh...

What's interesting is that he sounds so much older on the phone all of a sudden. Geriatric CTY must be agreeing with him.  And, he even asked me when we were going on our next group of college visits, instead of me having to cajole him into going. So, maybe he's finally getting with the program. :)

We just got back from two weeks in the midwest, during which we visited the University of Chicago and Northwestern, after which my son declared that he has seen enough colleges.

Of course, he still hasn't seen any real *safeties.* I think he is discounting how much effort it takes to fill out an application, and whether he will really want to fill out speculative ones for places he hasn't seen.

My son also has no idea of how much time it will take to write essays, prepare recommendations, etc. They'll learn soon enough.

When my daughter applied to college she got all of her EA and rolling applications done, and then kind of lost steam with the application process. She had three additional colleges that she had never visited that she was planning to apply to - she had her rec's, transcripts, test scores, etc. - but she never finished the applications. Two of the schools actually called her and basically said she was in if she just sent the application. But, she was tired and happy with her choices, so the 4 schools she'd applied to ended up being it. Looking back on it now, that really wasn't a bad choice on her part. :)

Hi all,

After a roller-coaster of a summer, I thought I'd update where my son is on this college adventure and catch up with all of you.

Son's list now has Denison University OH, Beloit College WI, Allegheny College PA, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology IN, and now he's added Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University AZ.  This summer, S took second in State in the American Private Enterprise program held at University of Kentucky and now he's attending a camp at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, entitled Operation Catapult.  Unknown to me, at the end of Operation Catapult, Rose-Hulman is going to let the participants apply to the college without submitting app fees, essays, or recommendation letters.  Son says he plans to apply.

This is starting to happen way too fast now!!!

Oh dear me. S will probably apply EA to Boston College and UMiami. If he doesn't decide that Penn is so much the first choice that he is willing to go ED. Then to the UCs. Then everything else. That is IF he doesn't procrastinate. Mwahahahahaha laughs the deity of college applications at the mildy deluded mother:). He returns from Costa Rica Thursday. Goes off for a week at the Jersey Shore with his dad's family. And after that I go to China for a week. So starting the 2nd week in August, HE'S MINE for application hell! Mwahahahahha laughs the deity of motherhood which ought to trump everything else....

Oh well. I somehow think that I will not be pushing this child. I will not be allowed to. In fact I will probably have to invest in enormous amounts of duct tape. As opposed to D who would prance into the living room and say, " Now, Mom, let's talk about my applications...." Which we would. For the next 45 minutes. With regularity. This will be different.

My D is working on her EA application to her first choice school as I type this ... apparently (if I understand what she's saying correctly), she has to complete an initial application which includes a series of short answer questions and send that in, at which point they then send her "The Essay Question" to write. Her goal is to finish the first part and submit it today. We'll see.

Her transcript is supposed to be ready to send tomorrow and I know her GC has at least one of her two teacher recommendations in hand (she needs to e-mail the other teacher to remind him, though he may have already sent it in to the school).

She is also finishing up recording a CD that she will submit with the essay and the check and then I guess she's done with that until the school contacts her with her audition/interview date. (Though she's also working on a separate CD to submit for a scholarship that's due October 1)

At this point, she is holding off on the paperwork for her other applications (four schools). I think she wants to see how her audition/interview goes first and she would still have a few months (plus she is retaking her SATs in October so there is no way she'd submit to the other schools until she gets those scores ... her first choice is SAT optional and she is still undecided as to whether to submit her current scores).

Oh, my gosh.
My D is still stressing out about where to apply. Her list keeps changing and she has few firm ideas at all.

My son is at a journalism workshop at Indiana University right now, and won't be back until Thursday night. But from what I know at this time, he is still planning to major in journalism and wants to go to a school with a well-respected journalism program and that will offer him merit money and an honors program.

His list (top to bottom) at this time:
University of Missouri - Columbia (#1 pick - plus he is guaranteed honors & direct journalism admit)
University of Maryland - College Park
Indiana University - Bloomington
American University (this might get crossed off)
University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill (it's a reach since he is OOS)
Ohio University (this will probably get crossed off)

He would like to apply to Northwestern University, but since it's highly unlikely we will qualify for aid, it's financially out of reach for us... he might apply anyway just to see if he gets in.

There are also several other good journalism schools that he has crossed off his list for one reason or another.

He has done some work on his essays already. Some of these schools have really easy applications & rolling or early admissions, which is nice for him. The High School Journalism Institute at Indiana U has already given him a small scholarship if he goes there and majors in journalism.

Looks like a very solid list. Forgive me, but I can't recall his stats, but if they're good, he might want to also take a look at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School - he might get some merit money there, depending on his stats.

I don't know if his stats are quite good enough for the half tuition scholarships at USC, but I think he would be close. I have heard that their J-school is very good. However, he doesn't want to live in sunny Southern California! Gee, I'd move there.

USC just sent him a viewbook, which I left in a conspicuous place so that he will see it when he gets home.

We're also making some progress here.  My D's list currently includes:
McGill, Boston University, Temple, Ithaca College, SUNY Buffalo, possibly University of Maryland.  She's visited them all, except Buffalo, which we'll see on the way home on our October trip, when I expect her to add 1 or 2 from the following: U-Chicago, Northwestern, DePaul and University of Michigan.  She has focused her search on programs that will offer music performance (violin) AND music history.

I am very pleased that she has a nice range of good bet, match, reach in terms of academics, music and finances!  There are also early action, early audition, and rolling admission options in this mix as well.  And based on her stats, a good shot at merit money at some of them.

She finished her "senior autobiography" and e-mailed it to her college counselor the day after she got the reminder.  She's almost finalized her teacher recommendation list (although for several good reasons was not able to nail those down school ended last month).  She's signed up for the common app and started working on her brag sheet and her music resume.  She's working hard on an ambitious repertoire list for auditions.  No work on essays yet, but since she's s strong and creative writer I'm not worried about that.

She's off to a month-long music festival of Sunday, so I'm pretty happy with what she's got accomplished so far.

I am impressed with how many folks are actively working on their college applications.  Son's schedule is crammed full with camps and summer homework for his fall high school classes.  His goal is to have his college applications completed and sent (including teacher and GC recs) by October 1.  He is a strong analytical writer, but not strong in personal essays.  I worry that he won't have time to prepare adequately for filling out his applications.  But then I'm near panicked about just about everything associated with this process right now -- and all I can do is sit back and watch the drama unfold!

No need to be impressed by any progress at our house. My son is nowhere near working on his applications and his list is still changing like a chamelion, depending on his mood. I'm not really worried. I know that all of it -- essays, list, the rest of his life -- are all perculating deep inside his brain and will be finished before any deadlines pass.

Meanwhile, he has discovered vinyl records. He found a stack of our old LPs and is giving them a whirl. It does a mother's heart good to be told that she had "cool" music tastes way back when. :)

I'm still living on the accumulated capital of having introduced my son to Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, The Band (via The Last Waltz) and Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding, amongst others--the first two before he was ready for them, so that made me REALLY cool. :P

LOL! Recently, son and I were in a record store (a REAL record store, not a CD store) and he asked me for advice on which Grateful Dead album he should buy. I think the last time he asked me for advice on anything was when he was in middle school. :)

Totally off subject, but this month's issue of Rolling Stone has a superb series of articles on 1967 and the "Summer of Love" that looks at what was happening in San Francisco, London, LA, NY, and Detroit. Both my son and I enjoyed reading it, but for different reasons.
