I also empathize! D finished her applications last week, but has two scholarship applications due, on the 15th and 16th.
She finished the first one last Friday afternoon. I rushed it to the post office, but missed closing time. It should have been picked up early Saturday -- I assume they postmark them at the time of pickup????
She then spent the rest of Friday working on the other. (4 essays.) She spent hours, and made no progress. She came to me in tears about 10:00 at night. I told her to go to bed, because being sleepy wasn't going to help anything. She had all state auditions Saturday morning, then is spending the rest of the 3-day weekend at an orchestra event. This last application can be submitted electronically, so she will have to do it Monday evening when she gets home. Or not go to that school!
She called this morning - got up early to get her homework done before rehearsals. Had forgotten her Calculus worksheet. I overheard my H reading the problems to her over the phone. Her all state audition didn't go well, either. Not surprising, but definitely disappointing, since this was her first/last opportunity for high school all state. But I pointed out to her that I would rather the all state audition go poorly than the college auditions, which have been going well.
She is under so much stress, and it's hurting her performance in everything. After the 16th, things will settle a bit. That one acceptance helps, too.
Meanwhile, S2 returned to school yesterday. With D gone, I am having an empty-nest weekend, and do not like it at all. I feel a major funk coming on.

Oh, binx, I'm sorry to hear that both you and your D are having a rough time of it. January can be depressing enough without all this other stuff!
I think I'm going to take a break from all this admissions stuff and go do . . . laundry! (Now that's desperation.)

Binx, You also have my sympathies. The whole process is so stressful because we can't really control it. I went through many a funk of my own when my daughter was in the throes, and I know I will again with my son. I agree with Limner: take a break from even thinking about it and do something non-college related to treat yourself. Hugs to you!

Yes, a break is a necessity these days-- we went up skiing yesterday, a beautiful day and so wonderful to be away from deadlines and essays!
I don't know why, but WUSTL stated that scholarship paperwork had to "arrive" by the 15th. That really makes it more of a pain than "postmarked", and particularly when the 15th is a holiday! There was a lot of discussion on the other board as to whether WUSTL was going to have someone in the office to collect the mailings even though the university was closed that day, or whether they were delaying the deadline to the 16th. There was no clear decision, so better safe than sorry, $25 more dollars into the application effort

entomom, skiing sounds great--glad you were able to take a break and have some fun. I, OTOH, have clean sheets on the bed and clothes to put on tomorrow.
Our 9-year-old has informed us that she's going to the state university (where H teaches) that's here in town. After all this stress, I'm ready to acquiesce and let her. Actually, I would have suggested S apply there as a safety, but he definitely wants to get out of town.

Binx, brava to your daughter for even doing the All-State audition! I know that her years in Germany made this a "last and only chance" for her, but taking that on during the peak of applications and the beginning of college auditions is something.
My daughter refused to audition for all-states or go to state solo and ensemble last year. She made the decision early in her senior year, after looking at her college audition schedule and her involvement with an All-State choir at U-M (and before she was even sure she would qualify for either All-States or state S&E!) After she knew she did qualify, I asked her if she wanted to reconsider, as it would be something to add to her resume. She didn't hesitate to say "no", reasoning that if her resume didn't speak for itself already, then the additions wouldn't make a bit of difference. She also decided against applying for an arts scholarship at one school to which she applied; at that point, the school had moved far enough down her list that she was reasonably certain she wouldn't attend if accepted.
Her decisions ratcheted up my anxiety level at the time, but hindsight being 20/20, I now recognize the wisdom of my daughter's decisions for her. She was able to focus on her HS courses and ECs, prepare for her auditions, and complete her senior project for graduation (a recital) by the end of March. The tears and stress of December and January gave way to a thoroughly enjoyable second semester at her HS, so that by the time she graduated, she was able to declare her senior year was the best and most fun of all. Her approach wouldn't necessarily work for everyone (and I'm certain I gained a few grey hairs because of it), but if I learned anything, it's that sometimes my daughter did know best...but please let that be our secret!

Binx - Echoing the sentiments of MezzoMom, congrats to your daughter for even attempting the all-state audition under such difficult circumstances. Adding the audition to an already full plate is amazing! And I do believe the kids learn something from each and every audition, even if the something is, "I'm never doing this again!" Or perhaps they learn that they actually do have limitations! Whatever the lesson, I always tell my D that the experience of auditioning will help her with the next one!
My D is high school class of 2008, college 2012. But I am always curious and more than mildly interested to read the experiences and tales of the class of 2007/2011. As she is my first, I try to glean as much as I can from those who have gone before me! I have to say that the stories are very helpful and at times, frightening or at the very least, intimidating. And my, oh my, how the process has changed!!
Thanks to all for sharing your stories!

All applications are in. All scholarship applications are in, including the elephant essay! Calc teacher let her use a homework pass on her unfinished worksheet. Will lose 5 points on her history homework when she turns it in late, tomorrow.
But all body parts are still attached, she's smiling once in awhile, and she asked me for my exercise ball to use as a desk chair "so I won't fall asleep doing my homework."

Way to go, binx's D! She'll be smiling more once it sinks in that she's done with all the admissions stuff.
Great news!
My son said he's having a hard time getting back into the swing of school (they started back on the 9th, and just had yesterday off. He's now cleaning his bathroom--that's one way to put off calculus homework!

Limner, that sounds so familiar, although instead of cleaning, mine has somehow finds a video game that needs attention, but to his credit, usually after Calc is finished.

My kids just started back from the break on the 9th too, and we've had two snow/ice days since then! It's been really hard to get back into the swing of school (and work), hope this isn't a pattern for 2007.

Surprise of the day - D made All State! She is pretty far back (about last chair, first violins) but we are amazed that she made it at all, considering how she felt she played. We are all very happy that she will get this chance to go. It is encouraging news to carry her through her remaining college auditions, too.

Binx, that's wonderful! And especially since this was her only chance to do this. Congrats!
And entomom, what great news about the scholarships. I've got all appendages crossed--which makes for difficulty in walking, but what the heck!

| Whoot! D just named Presidential Scholar Candidate! She likely won't go any further in the selection process as it requires several essays and results in one female and one male student from each state receiving a trip to Washington DC which culminates in meeting the President. Between $$ and Bush, she'd rather put her efforts into the former. It'll at least be something that she can add to the mid-term reports she'll be sending to RD schools.

Congrats, EM! Whoot, indeed. And I have to laugh, I can definitely see your D's point on writing more essays and meeting the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
