When my son applied to college 10 yrs. ago he submitted several applications that he filled out with my electric typewriter. He made corrections with white-out and sent them out over my objections (boys ). His lack of neatness and obsessiveness probably led to his rejections from Northwestern and Stanford. These days, what do major colleges and universities do with all these original documents upon receipt?
Actually, a few colleges do ask that recommendations be sent in the larger side envelope. Stanford is one that requests this. I believe they do so because it makes it easier for them to scan the materials into their admissions database.
