I'll make sure to check if the school requires certain things.  My orginal feelings about the envelopes were that papers looked better without folds and that they are easier to file.  Then I started to wonder if I was being obsessive!

scoop ~ you're getting serious envelope detail!  I wonder if anyone of importance even sees an envelope or an original document.  When my son applied to college 10 yrs. ago he submitted several applications that he filled out with my electric typewriter.  He made corrections with white-out and sent them out over my objections (boys ).  His lack of neatness and obsessiveness probably led to his rejections from Northwestern and Stanford.  These days, what do major colleges and universities do with all these original documents upon receipt?

Actually, a few colleges do ask that recommendations be sent in the larger side envelope. Stanford is one that requests this. I believe they do so because it makes it easier for them to scan the materials into their admissions database.

So, it never hurts to ask. :)
