Congrats to your son!

I like your method of hiding the acceptance letter amongst college mail.  My son has applied to a summer program, and if he's accepted (and he doesn't hear about his acceptance from his school, which he might), I will probably do the same thing!

Thanks! :)

He should hear sometime in the beginning of April.  Once we know, we'll be better able to plan his summer (summer calculus class, impacted wisdom teeth removal, college visits?).

Thanks!  He wrote a risky essay for it, and I told him so.  The other parts of his application were great, though.

Yesterday, son got the most amazing piece of college mail - a calendar from Carleton that takes the student through the application process, with - what else? - a quirky sense of humor.  Example - how to turn college brochures into origami frogs, college essay mad lib, how (not) to dress for the college interview, etc.

Granted I've got a pretty strong bias to Carleton, but son and I gave top marks for this.

My son received that calendar as well. I thought it was so inventive ! Surely to put the school on the radar of this New England family.

Update on my son -- he was accepted to the Summer Residential Governor's School for Humanities for my state, so he will spend four weeks at a college campus for that (FREE!).  (This was the selective summer program I'd written about earlier.) He was also chosen to go to Boys State.

And on the last day of July he gets all four of his impacted wisdom teeth yanked!:?

Congratulations on the summer program.  My D also needs wisdom teeth out this summer.  I keep procrastinating on the date.

Isn't that a heck of a thing to look forward to for your summer vacation?  We would have had it done over spring break, but ds had mock trial practice all but one day of that week.

Thanks for the reminder - need to schedule dentist appointment.  Whaddaya want to bet they'll mention wisdom teeth?  I'll never forget having mine removed - green bruised, puffy cheeks.  I looked like a Martian chipmunk.

We had the joy of being told a year ago last summer that this past summer would be fine to have them taken out, only to have D's regular dentist tell us in November that they needed to come out ASAP.  Let's just say that having all four wisdom teeth extracted five days before the big holiday choir concerts wasn't wonderful.

It is a good thing that they only have to come out once.

Son just left to take SAT II exams (Math II and US History).  Keeping fingers crossed this will be the last of the standardized tests.  At least, until the AP tests next week.

Fingers crossed!  My son is taking the Bio and US History SAT2 tests on June 7 (and his AP-a-thon starts this coming Friday).  He will still have to take the Math2 SAT2 test at some point, unless he crosses off the colleges requiring that one (the only one I can think of right off the bat is Cornell) off his list.

I was shocked, shocked! when son said he considered taking a 3rd SAT2 yesterday.  But he couldn't decide on a subject and it made him happy to leave while others were toiling away on the SAT.

What APs are everyone's students taking?

Son is signed up for English Language, US History, and Computer Science AB.

I just wanted to drop in and wish all you rising Parents In Application Season (PAIS) good luck for the next 12 months. Passing the baton. I have absolutely no words of wisdom that Carolyn hasn't passed along already:).

I will hold out this carrot - for those of you going through this for your youngest kid it feels absolutely fabulous to finish up this season.

Hi to other parents of juniors.  My daughter will have an intense week ahead of AP tests-Spanish Language on Tuesday, Calculus B/C on Wednesday, and US History on Friday.   The following week she'll have English Language and Chemistry.

The good news is that we both feel that the language tests, both Spanish and English are very difficult to study for at this point so she's down to 3 that really require some review of material.

This is the down side of being at a Newsweek highly rated school!  The only really challenging courses are APs, so the most serious juniors typically take 4 or 5.  The work load this year has not been as intense as I had worried, but these 2 weeks will be pressure-filled.

We try really hard to appreciate teachers for their unique perspectives and styles-but this weekend my dd is painfully aware of which ones were well-organized and careful to stick to the AP curriculum, and which ones were "winging it."

School doesn't end until mid-June here, so she's hoping for some goof-off time in these classes after the AP tests are finished.

Best of luck to all our hard-working juniors-here's to sucess! and even more importantly-to sanity and happiness!

Joy
