PSAT scores won't be distributed at my son's school til early January. I know he can wait, I think I can.
So at Thanksgiving I was telling the relatives (none of whom have college-age children; the oldest is a HS freshman) about where S is interested in applying. I told them he was interested in techie schools and his current favorite is Rose Hulman, which of course was completely unknown to them. I think they are of the opinion it is something like one of those technical schools that advertises on late-night television.
Sigh.
And is it terrible of me to have "just you wait - you'll see" thoughts?

I understand, Scoop. My son has been loaded down with homework the past few nights, which means he isn't getting enough sleep (not that most teens ever do!).
Nice to know that the PSAT scores are out, and that it's probably our schools that are withholding them! Anxious to see how ds scored.
BTW, I think I wrote a few months back about my ds and calculus (whether or not to take). Well, he did start out in it (AP CalcAB), and was doing poorly. Despite a small class (17?), he wasn't clicking with the teacher's methods, so he dropped it. Since it's an AP class, he could drop it before 2nd semester with no penalty (not true with non-AP classes unless they are dropped within the first 2 or so weeks of class). He just dropped it about two weeks ago. He's now auditing precalculus, which he took last year and got a B (we have the 94 and above is an A scale, with no pluses or minuses). Why is he auditing a course he already took? So he keeps current on his math, because he will probably take the Math SAT2 this June. He is also intending to take Calc at our community college this summer, and will need to score decently on the placement test to do that. He will get an audit grade, but that won't count toward GPA or class rank.
Dh (engineer) is annoyed at ds for not putting enough work into Calculus. But ds has an awful schedule -- 8 classes with no lunch period, plus he attends high school out of zone so has to get on his bus at 6 a.m. He's also busy with extracurriculars. He simply did not have the time to fit in Calculus.
I am really dreading next year and the college application circus. The high school Class of 2009 is supposed to be the biggest of all, so the competition is going to be awful for the top schools. Another part of the puzzle will fall into place once those PSAT and SAT scores are in. I think ds is planning to take the SAT at the end of January.
He took the old format SAT as an 8th grader (just for fun!), and has taken practice SATs plus taken the PSAT in 9th and 10th grades. I *think* I can figure his ballpark scores for the SAT, but who knows?

Thanks everyone!
I haven't decided when I'm taking the SAT for the first time, January or May.. From my PSAT it looks like my writing skills assessed have improved greatly, my math has improved, and my reading has decreased so.

PSAT scores are now accesible on the College Board site if your student was already signed up for My College Quick Start.
S improved, but not enough for commended.

I just looked up My College Quick Start. Is it free (didn't see anything about cost)?
My son didn't sign up. If he signs up now, will he be able to view his PSAT results?

| My College Quick Start is free, but I believe you had to have registered last year (if your student took the PSAT last year) to access scores. Last year, they posted scores, but you could only access them with a special access code on the score report (in other words, you could only check them online after you already received the scores). So there wasn't much incentive to sign up. According to the head of counseling in my school district, less than 40 students in my school district signed up for this last year. I imagine there will be quite a few more signing on this year.

| I think my D is signed up but the site is telling me that this won't be available until the week of Dec 10. Where did you find scores?

When you click to look on the 2006 scores, on the right hand side should be a link to the 2007 scores. Or you can change the web address for the 2006 scores to say 2007 instead of 2006.
EDITED TO ADD: It appears that College Board has removed access to 2007 PSAT scores for now. We'll see if they get reposted next week. Think the right hand didn't know what the left hand was doing?

| Thanks. I was only able to access her 2006 sophmore scores today. It looks like it will be a useful report. First time I have seen it...D never signed on with her password to look at last years breakdown of results. I signed her on with college board today and made sure to check off the boxes that will allow them to send me anything they send her. Our school has told the kids that they will get their scores on Dec. 17 and they may be available on Naviance a bit earlier.

The scores are out. We got ours at our high school on Monday. I am encouraging our Dean of Students to at least give the juniors their scores before Christmas.

First semester Junior year is finished for me!
My finals went alright.. I don't know about Accounting or Yearbook grades yet. (Hoping for an A- in accounting but not holding my breath, yearbook should be an A)
I ended up with A's in all my other classes except English. I bombed the final (scraped by with a C) and ended up with an A-.
Merry Christmas to everyone btw!

Posted also in the Test Prep section, but since it involves a subject also discussed in this thread, posted here, too:
My son got his scores on the College Board website yesterday. And no, he didn't register for "Quick Start." Let me explain -- three years ago took the last administration of the old SAT as an 8th grader "just for fun." (He could have used his scores to qualify for any CTY program, but he was never interested; he didn't register for the SAT through CTY.) His older brother took care of registration, and although he's here with us now (semester break), he couldn't remember the e-mail address he used, the user name, or the password. This was Tuesday. Second son needed that information, because he was nearly down to the wire to register for the 1/26 SAT test date, and had tried to register on Tuesday by setting up a new account. College Board wouldn't let him, telling him there was already an account for that name.
So yesterday bright and early I called College Board to get them to crack the code from three years ago. When I got the necessary information, and my son went to register online, he saw there was a link to his 2007 PSAT scores.
*If* the National Merit Semifinalist cutoff for our state remains the same as it was for this year's senior class, he missed the cutoff by one stinking point. In many states he would be a semifinalist. Darn! But the 80 in CR was very nice, and we hope he can duplicate that on the SAT.

Well, that was really embarrassing. I posted in the class of 2010 (when my D graduates from college) instead of the 09 (when my S graduates from HS) forum.
Not good to confuse the kids!
Since today is the day the PSAT info was released to colleges (and my son has started getting emails), it could be argued that today is the "opening day" of the class of 09 admissions season, with a few months of overlap with 08.

Don't feel badly...I have to often think to myself which folder I belong in. Some places there are threads by college graduation year and some by high school graduation year. There doesn't seem to be much to write about my 2nd semester college senior son (I'll post when he gets a job!); the focus is now on the high school junior.
So yesterday was the day the PSAT info was released to colleges? Yes, the deluge will begin. I don't know if my son got any e-mails yesterday. He generally doesn't tell me. I do see the snail-mailed stuff, though.
He seemed to get a lot as a sophomore, so now I expect the deluge will really begin.
He took the SAT on Saturday, and is signed up again to take it March 1 (he can find his Jan scores online on 2/14). If he needs to take the SAT one more time, he can do that next fall. He will have 5 AP tests in May, and then will take three SAT2 tests in June (US History, Bio, Math2).

Sounds like it's testing season! I just signed my son up for the ACT. I did have him registered for the April SAT, but it looks like he'll be doing a computer competition that day. I have absolutely no experience with the ACT, but was pleasantly surprised to see that their online prep course is much less expensive than the SAT online course. Then perhaps the SAT in May, AP tests, then SAT subject tests. Hmmm - maybe it's more like torture season.

Torture season is very fitting. I missed the last week of school because I was in the bed with the flu turned Sinus Infection...... Now my stack of makeup work (and granted, I only have half of it!!!!!) is looking like pure torture..
I really need to figure out which SAT IIs I want to take as well... Or if I'm going to take them. As of right now, none of my top choices require them so, I haven't decided. It's why I wish my school had honors classes, I'd feel better prepared to take the subject tests if I felt more thoroughly learned in them. oh well I suppose...

Kayleigh, it must be torture to miss a whole week of school. My son would hate that -- he doesn't even like to miss a day, because of the AP classes.
I don't know if my son will take the ACT or not. I guess we'll see how he does on the SAT. My older (college senior) son did take the ACT and SAT, and did just a bit better on the ACT. I know that a few of the colleges my son is considering do require SAT2s, so that's why he's planning on taking them in June.

| Son just heard that he was accepted to Rose-Hulman's Operation Catapult summer program. I got the mail, saw the envelope, evaluated the thickness of it and decided it was good news, hid it among the rest of the college mail and presented the stack to him. He went through everything and then finally saw the R-H envelope and grunted (with excitement). Looking forward to this time next year!
