We are so delighted with this find, I just have to share it so it is tucked away for future reference.
Our eldest will be attending Mannes School of Music in the fall to work towards an MM in cello performance. Mannes is a very small school which is part of the New Unversity in New York City. Dormitory options turned out to be less than ideal, especially for a grad student. He was then faced with the task of trying to find and "afordable" place to live in a relatively safe neighborhood in a city he knows virtually nothing about while living 1000 miles away from said city.
He emailed a friend of his who will also be moving to NYC in the fall to see if he was interested in getting an apartment together. His friend told him that he was going to apply to International House.

After looking into it, son decided it looked great. He applied to live there and just found out he has been accepted.
It is a residence hall for graduate students and interns in the NYC area. You have to be 21 to live there. Thirty percent of the residents are from North America, the rest are from other countries. Facilities include a dining room, pub, gym, workout room, auditorium, and practice rooms. Move in and move out dates are flexible. Rooms are furnished and they provide bedding and towels. Rent is pretty reasonable for NYC. He can live there for up to 3 years.
I-House is located in Morningside Heights near the Columbia U campus. I think it will be great because it will provide a community for him made up of people with a wide variety of interests and backgrounds. I think it will give him exposure to much more of NYC than if he were just renting a random apartment somewhere. They also have scholarships and he will apply for one of those to help out with his expenses.
Students who are going to NYC for grad school or internships ought to seriously look at living here. Son just emailed his studio teacher at Mannes about where he would be living. His teacher said that he has had several students at I-House over the years and they have all had very positive experiences.

| Shennie, thanks for sharing this - it's one of those tidbits of information that I like to stash away because I know sooner or later someone will need it. Sounds like a great place!

Hey Shennie, your son will be near my daughter! My d is younger, but she has friends of all ages & her bf is a musician, which of course means that music is a big part of my daughter's world, too -- so who knows, maybe they will run across one another! We don't have my daughter's housing assignment yet, but I'm thinking she will probably be about 4 blocks away.
