As DD pointed out above, another beef I have about self-reported information is that different schools use different methods for determining student GPAs for admissions purposes, yet often report the GPAs on enrolled student transcripts to publishers. That is why I strongly urge students and parents to ask every school they are considering how they look at GPAs for admissions purposes, because sometimes the recomputed "median" GPAs in guidebooks are inflated from what is actually used in admissions. (And, in some cases, schools that appear to have low GPAs compared to others are actually just using the numbers that they use to make admissions decisions.)

Again, you shouldn't drive yourself crazy with all of this, but it is helpful to know whether you are comparing apples to apples or apples to oranges.

Others may weight the gpa and not footnote it -- for example, U-Miami has an average accepted gpa of 4.0 -- yeah, right.:P
UMiami does have a accepted gpa of 4.0.  Weighted.  The key word here is weighted.  Son had a 3.97 unweighted gpa.  Miami weighted his grades according to their scale, even though our high school did not weight.  So perhaps maybe it should be published whether the avg. accepted gpa is weighted or not.

CaneMom, Good idea. It would be very helpful if schools/publishers noted if the average GPA is weighted or not. Most schools will tell you if you ask, though. But, when you're looking through those guidebooks, it makes it hard to compare schools if you don't know how things were done.
