I just received a flyer for a small college fair that includes Claremont McKenna, Connecticut College, Grinnell, Haverford, Kenyon, Macalester, Colorado and Sarah Lawrence. A strange grouping of colleges. I wonder what connects them all.
The locations:
Boston - 9/17, Portland - 9/19, Stamford - 9/19, Long Island (Uniondale) - 9/20 and New York City - 9/21.

| That is an interesting combination of colleges, isn't it? I can see connections between some of the schools, but as a bunch, they're fairly diverse. And, maybe that's the point: If you don't like one, you may like another. Please let us know what you find out if you go.

That collection of colleges sounds interesting. Could you share the info about the New York fair on 9/21? I'd be interested in taking my daughter. Thank you.

| Literally, the flyer listing the colleges is all I received. I received it from two colleges by, I assume, being on their mailing list. That's all I know.

This is a very strange grouping. Did anyone go to, or hear about the meeting?

| They never explained how the group got together but they have been doing this for over ten years. Each group gave a 5 to 10 minute Powerpoint presentation and then the typical table setup with reps and alumni to talk to. I believe that the Director of Admissions from each school was there along with some alumni.

I have attended three different "8 of the Best" presentations since 1998 (one with #1, Kenyon College '03; one with #2 Grinnell College '08; and one with a friend with a younger daughter, college '10). It has grown in popularity and size as these colleges become better known in the Seattle area. (Being a Calif school, Claremont McKenna is the best known in Seattle.)
The group got together for two main reasons:
1) many colleges became aware that it was not only more cost productive to share facility rental expense, but also that the general turn-out numbers would be considerably larger for several colleges presenting togther instead of just one college doing an info night
2) this particular group of eight colleges got together because they discovered over many-a-meet-up-chats before and after the big national and smaller regional college fairs that while their respective colleges have different attributes that their admissions offices shared a similar philosophy about the admissions process.
It was at my second presentation (with my #2) in Fall '03 that I learned (from the Kenyon rep who had recruited my #1) that the "8 of the Best" has an absolute internal requirement that each of the colleges must be represented by either the head or second-in-command of each of the respective colleges. If your student has any of these 8 colleges on his /her list, this is a GREAT opportunity for him/her to schmooze with the literal powers-that-be -- especially if you arrive a few minutes early and beat the pack in. (They do a limited bit of ~table talk~ before the group presentation and then allow much more table time after the presentation -- but the tables are generally pretty crowded after the presentation.) If your student is interested in any of the eight colleges, this could be an opportunity for your student to establish some name recognition and have someone else (a very powerful someone else) in addition to the regional rep in his / her corner when admissions decisions are made.
[I do sincerely believe that both of my students made these types of bonus personal connections with the admission office at their ultimate colleges at 8 of the Best . . . #1 was very obviously recruited by his college as a result of the meet up at 8 of the Best -- I mean, he REALLY hit it off with the rep -- and 8 of the Best gave #2 a second opportunity to chat with the head of admissions at his college (the first one being when he was visiting the college during the summer; he did not interview with the head at that time, but did chat with him for few minutes in the admissions office lobby.) When we were leaving the 8 presentation and walked by him, the head of admissions actually called out #2's name to say good-bye . . . the admissions head must've talked to at least 50 students that night, but #2 had him all to himself for about 10 minutes before the presentation formally began.)
In addition to the table times and the individual college presentations, the reps also take turns doing a quick intro of the various aspects of the college admissions process. . . but always with the caveat to check with each college under consideration for specific requirements and policies.

Rainstate,
Thanks for the information. Out of curiousity, I did a search to see if I could find next year's (2007's) schedule. This appears to be a partial list:
