Just wrote about this on my blog, but do check out the website FindurU.com.

It is a search engine focused exclusively on colleges -- type in a keyword of a program, major, extracurricular or other criteria you are looking for in a college, and the search engine will return a list of colleges that have that keyword in their website. Each college entry includes a list of links directly to the pages where that keyword is included. You can narrow the search results down by location, cost, public/private, urban-rural-suburban, state and region. There's even a link next to each college that pulls up a map showing you where the school is located.

This is an AMAZING site -- I have been playing with it all morning, and it is a wonderful resource and tool. Enjoy!

Wow!  I thought I'd fool the search engine by entering in the 4 words that came to mind as the most important to my daughter during her college search: "urban russian linguistics dance".  It was a trick question because Barnard does not have a linguistics department or major -- but it is something that my daughter thought she was interested in when she was applying to colleges.  I remember that she wanted me to research those precise areas of study for her.

Well, guess what the #1 school on the list is?

Barnard College (NY)

Wow.  We could have saved a lot of time that was wasted looking at all those other schools.  ;)

LOL Leftcoast -- but the hunt is part of the fun. :)

I know you know this, but for those who might, if you don't get the results you are looking for on the first go-round, try putting the search term in quotation marks (i.e., "graphic design" or trying a slightly different term that is more specific (i.e., not just "fencing" but "fencing club" -- otherwise you end up with the wrong type of fences -- chain, wrought iron, etc.)

Haha. I just typed in "-liberal faculty" (for no liberal faculty) and the site returned FOUR schools.

What do they say about rotten apples!

Interesting what you can quickly learn on Finduru:

"young republicans" = 107 schools

"young democrats" = 152 schools

But thanks Carolyn, even without the keyword searching this is a great place just to quickly determine all the schools that are out there and then narrow them accordingly.

D is now curious about taking Arabic in college, but we're having trouble identifying the range of colleges where Arabic is taught -- even if there isn't a major in it.  (Probably not interested in majoring in the language -- just learning it well.)

I thought that the search tool would do it, but searching for Arabic, or Arabic classes seems to bring up only schools that offer it as a major, and even there I think that it is missing quite a few.

(We know the usual suspects -- now we're trying to broaden the search and find the others, including those in consortiums, where we might also look.)

Warblers passed along this site, which can help identify a number of possibilities:

http://www.carla.umn.edu/lctl/db/index.html

One caution: there are probably some schools out there offering Arabic that may not yet be in the database. For instance, UC Davis recently launched a Middle East studies program, that will include course work in Arabic, in addition to studying Middle Eastern countries, politics, culture, and peoples.

Also, don't overlook summer learning opportunities. Beloit, for instance, doesn't offer Arabic during the regular school year, but its Languages STudies Institue not only offers a six week intensive program in Arabic, it has scholarships available from the State Department for students who are studying Arabic. So, look at a number of possibilities, not just the obvious ones.

Another very good way to find programs, unique majors, or special interests is to go to google, click on advanced search. Then, enter your search term (i.e., "arabic") Limit your domain to .edu  Google will then search only college websites, and you will typically find lots and lots of leads on colleges that might fit the bill.

Thanks, Carolyn -- that's a great resource, and a good thought on how to look for other schools.  The Beloit summer program (for next summer) also looks very interesting.

I thought I'd seen a reference to CARLA before, but I couldn't remember the name.  I did try searching the forum for Arabic, but that didn't yield the CARLA post -- thanks for your very good memory!  (If you do find a new webhost, I'd love it if the search function was a little more comprehensive -- this isn't the first time I would swear that I've read something on here, but then couldn't find the relevant post via a search result.)

One of my cousins was here and telling about her sister's daughter, who is a (young) foreign services officer, and D was fascinated by it -- and heard that one of the things that helps is proficiency in "helpful" foreign languages.  Since she likes learning languages, it has headed her off in a different direction than last week.  What next week brings, who knows.  (On the other hand, for the rising senior who up until now hasn't had any idea of what she'd like to major in, learning about what's required to become a foreign service officer has certainly been helpful -- much more so than the interest inventory that suggested that she-who-hates-bugs-and-crawlies might be a park ranger, and told one of her friends to consider clowning.
