| I seem to recall reading somewhere about a college that houses all incoming first year students in singles. Am I imagining this?

| Hmmm....I know that there are some schools that give singles to a large percentage of freshmen, including Hampshire, Beloit, Wesleyan, Washington & Lee. Reed houses most of its freshmen in two-room suites, so they basically end up with singles with connecting doors. But, I don't recall any school that gives a single to EVERY freshman. In fact, singles are pretty rare on the vast majority of campuses, and the few that are available usually are reserved for upperclassmen. If there is a school that gives singles to all freshmen, I'd love to know it too! Last edited on Sun Jul 15th, 2007 11:00 pm by CarolynLawrence

| Our D is at W&L. I think about 80% of the dorm rooms are singles.

Amherst was the same way. They called them "split doubles" but they were really "adjoining singles". Each resident could shut the common door and assure themselves of privacy.

| Mills College in CA has more than 80% singles. (That only counts if you're female though; it's still a single sex school.)

University of Chicago has quite a few dorms with singles or split doubles that are available to first year students. My son had a single his first two years (then spent a year abroad and lived in an off campus apartment his last year).

My son was at a summer camp at Reed a couple of years ago. The dorm rooms did indeed have two rooms, but it had the feel of a single room with a wall down the middle. My son, since he got their first, took the inner room, which meant he had to walk thru his roomies room to get to his. The closets were side by side, and were on my son's side, so his roomie had to have full access to my sons portion. I cannot remember if there was a real door connecting the two.
This, of course, was only one of several dorms on campus.
Olin had all singles, with bathrooms. Their dorms are supposed to be amazing.
At caltech it is possible to get a single as a freshman.

Reed is also adding 4 new dorms to be opened fall 2008. LACs seem more likely to have singles, my daughter was assigned to a single, not a divided double at Reed, even though she didn't ask for one ( it worked out well however).

| When my son was looking at colleges, I was surprised that Wesleyan in CT had singles for freshman and more than a handful.

Bryn Mawr also has a high number of singles--although more after freshman year.
U. Chicago has some singles for freshmen and so does Stanford.

My first D had a large private room the whole time she was at Mills College. They aren't at all hard to get. In fact, it's the doubles that were harder to get (they're cheaper).

| Dartmouth has enough Frosh singles such that everyone who has requested one receives one, at least over the past couple of years.
