Like the rest of you, I'm trying to figure this new system out too. If anyone has any questions, I'll try to answer them --- but if anyone knows the answers before I do, please jump in and share them!
And, I WELCOME any and all suggestions on how to make this a great community. If you have a forum you think would work, let me know. If you think I need to make a change, let me know. This is really YOUR community, and I want it to work for you.
I can't guarantee I'll be able to do everything suggested (the system has some limitations) but I promise to consider each and every one and see if it's workable.
Anyone who makes a great suggestion - gets crowned king or queen for the day. Today's crown goes to Thumper, for making the TERRIFIC suggestion to add the College Green section for just general chit-chat. Thumper, for your suggestion, I name you Queen of Suggestions for the day!
You can, of course, also PM or email me privately with questions and suggestions as well.

I just noticed I was queen for a day. Do I get a Renault Dauphine (don't you all remember that????)?
I have another suggestion that many of us don't need right now...but I'm hoping folks will "stick around" and plus, some have experience with this already...
Is there a place for Graduate Schools...admissions and such?
I know that Thumpson will likely be looking at that route, and I know precious little about that process (hoping HE takes the initiative...ha ha ha).

I think the grad school section would be helpful, but then again I would for personal reasons, right Thump?
If your going to add any more catagories Carolyn, might I suggest catagories by desired majors. I.E. (sciences, music, social sciences, etc.) The reason I'm suggesting, from everything I've read, so many times a lot of the admission process hinges not only on the program or school requirements as a whole, but also it depends on the program. I know that there is so much more that the music students have to contend with, and certain programs at certain schools have some programs much more stringent than others. Just a thought..........

I'd like to know why I can't cut and paste as I normally do, using a mouse. There's no right-click "paste" function.
And someone said there's a spellcheck too?? I don't see it.
Wonder if I need to update my javascript.

Hi Driver,
The spell check is in MY tool bar right above where I am typing this response...the far right item on the tool bar.
Do you have that? Hit reply and type a message...look at the top of the box where you are typing. If it's not there...hmmm.

Thump,
The far right item on my tool bar is a pair of {}, which, if clicked, will insert a pair of [][/] brackets into the message area. I use both Mozilla and Foxfire. I wonder if that might have anything to do with it? The strangest thing is the inability to cut and paste.

How odd is that...I just copied and pasted the above usint my mouse with no problem. I don't know how your browser might affect this function. I have the brackets also...but they are to the left of the ABC for spell check...is it possible you aren't seeing the whole toolbar?? maybe missing the last item on the right? Just a thought.

| I second (third?) the motion for a grad school forum. It'll be a couple years before I need it, but it will probably take a while to get some juniors/seniors/grad students in here.

I will add the grad school forum in the morning (it's my husband's birthday tonight and I promised to actually get off the computer!). Thanks for the suggestion - it's a good one.
I can cut and paste using my mouse without a problem. Driver, I'll take a closer look at the owner's manual in the morning and see if there are any restrictions that might be affecting your ability to do so.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions and questions --- I will try to be more prompt in answering them from now on!
Oh, and Thumper, once you are crowned queen for a day here, you get unlimited virtual champagne for the rest of your life. Just a little perk to keep you perky.

Why wait? I'm here!
While I do like the idea of a grad school forum, I think that the other site has some problems with them. One big issue is that you get a lot of 18-year-olds who can't help but ask their chances at Harvard Law. It's like those parents of eighth graders who keep asking how to help get their kid into Yale - except that there's a steady stream of the pre-college set. Not sure how to get around that problem - certainly, there are things that kids can do in their earlier years to not completely sink their chances of grad school - but it gets to be frustrating. Frustrating often leads to a lack of civility, decorum, and virtual champange.

If anyone else is having the problem I mentioned above--no paste option appears when you right-click (although the cut and copy functions work fine), BassDad pointed out to me that you can paste using the CTRL_V keys instead. Just put the cursor where you want to paste, and hit those keys.

| I keep getting e-mails whenever somebody posts a new message in a forum that I've participated in. I prefer to read from the web in order to keep my Inbox uncluttered. I've unchecked the box in my profile that says I want these e-mails. Any ideas about what I'm doing wrong?

| Thanks. That's what I've done previously, but the e-mails keep coming. Hmmm.

| L, as far as I can determine, it's not a retroactive unchecking. You'll probably continue to get e-mails until that particular thread dies out. This is only a theory on my part, but it seems consistent with the timing of my own "un-checking."

Forgot to add before that you should Save your preferences after changing anything. You probably did that, though.
I can't tell from the preferences page source-code how the bulletin board stores user preferences from one visit to the next. However, the board does read and set cookies using Javascript.
Some browsers allow you to block certain Javascript features while permitting others. Some allow you to selectively keep or junk cookies. If your browser offers these options, try different Javascript and cookie settings. You could even try a different browser if you have one. I'm using Opera with Javascript partially disabled and toss all cookies when I quit the browser. Preferences stick for me.
Alternatively, perhaps your preferences cookie crumbled somehow. When you login, check the box which asks to generate a new cookie. Caution--this may reset your preferences to default values.
Otherwise, I'm out of bullets.

For anyone having problems, it seems that there is in fact a browser issue. Check out the "Mana" thread in College Green.

CollegeHound,
A public thank you for your help. I am trying to keep things afloat but I don't have a clue how to do things like check sourcecode. However, the tech support is fairly good, so I will add this to my list of questions to ask them in the morning.
Thanks for your patience everyone as I work through all of the issues.
