Hi, I just joined, and as an experiment, I used Google advanced search options to look for Web pages that use the word "college" and belong to this domain. I was astonished to find user profile pages turning up in the search results. As a question to forum management, how much of this site do you want Google to be able to index?

Tokenadult-

Good question! I think it is wise to keep the information shared on our profile pages to a minimum. I'll be sure to alert Carolyn to this when she returns.

Token,
First, before everyone panics, doing a google search on the word "college" does not even turn up this site, let alone turn up user profiles. We'd need alot more traffic and quite a few links from other sites before this site starts nearing the top of the google search engine like some other sites we know.

However, if you use google advanced search and search specifically for this domain name (admissionsadvice.mywowbb.com) google will do a search of this domain. Google does that for every website. That may turn up user profiles. But, keep in mind that anyone who knows of this domain can simply come over here, click on your user name and see your user profile. So, this isn't really a major issue.

Google does scan through all sites eventually, and picks up terms as it goes. It will also search within domain names in the advanced search function. As far as I know, there is no way to stop google from doing this unless I make this a subscriber access only website, which I really do not want to do.

So, standard internet advice applies: if you do not want others to have access to your personal data or information, do not post it on the web --- here or elsewhere.

Anyhow, as I said, there is not much I can do to stop google from indexing the site without making this an entirely private site. At this time, I don't have plans to do that.

Carolyn

I just want to add that one good thing about this board is that Carolyn has it set to allow us unlimited time to edit our own posts. That means that no matter how old the post -- if you feel uncomfortable about something you've said or some piece of information contained in the post -- you can edit it to correct or delete the problem.
