A few people have experienced problems logging in or posting after registering. I apologize for the trouble. Here are several solutions that have worked to solve these problems in some cases --- I'm still working with tech support to figure out other potential problems. Again, sorry for the problem and hope this will help at least some.
1. The system does not like screen names that have spaces in them
(example: Tom Jones)
or punctuation of any kind in the screen name
(examples: Tom_Jones Tom'sJones Tom*Jones)
If the screen name you registered with has either, re-register deleting spaces and/or punctuation. That should fix the problem.
2. In some cases, cookies need to be deleted before the system will allow you to log in or post. You can do this by pressing the link on the log in screen (clear cookies) but if that fails, it is best to try to delete them directly from your web browser. Here are instructions for clearing cookies from the most common web browsers:
If you are having login problems, please follow the instructions below. Try to login after completing each step and stop when you can login successfully.
First of all, if you see a "reset the cookie used by this board" link on your board's login page, try using it. If after using this link, the problem persists, you might need to check your web browser settings.
Internet Explorer 6 Users:
1. Go to Tools > Internet Options, click Delete Cookies and then OK.
2. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Privacy, and make sure that the privacy setting is set to Medium. If not, set it to medium, and click OK.
3. Go to Tools > Internet Options > General, click the Settings button, and make sure that "check for newer versions of stored pages" is set to automatically. If not, set it to "automatically", and click OK.
FireFox Users:
Go to Tools > Options > Privacy. Click on Cookies to open its options, and make sure that Allow sites to set cookies is checked. If this setting is already checked, click the Clear button next to Cookies to clear cookies.
Nothing worked?
If changing your browser settings did not help, check whether you are using a third-party Internet firewall/security/antivirus software. Some of these software may block cookies, and cause login problems.

| My log in problems are intermittent. Much of the time I get here just like I did tonight. Site boots up immediately and I get to this nice format with no difficulty at all. So...I would assume my settings are fine. Other times, I get a totally different set up...almost a "text only" type of format...no table format...no colors, larger font, white background...very odd. Then there are times I just wait and wait and wait, and nothing comes up at all. I would agree that my setting were somehow wrong...or cookies or something if this were consistent..but it's not. Any ideas about intermittent problems? Luckily I'm persistent!!!

Thumper,
You're not alone. I get the same white screen from time to time and it is distracting. I have asked tech support several times about that and apparently it has something to do with the server. Generally, it reverts back to normal in a few minutes, but it is one of those techie things that I am unhappy with yet can't fix without buying my own server.

I really had problems when I first joined under the winesnob user name. Since then I was able to re-register under zinqueen and have saved the site under my favorites so that every time I come here, I am automatically already logged in. I don't DARE logout for fear that I'll never get back again
I tried the cookie thing, tried without the cookie button, etc and never could figure out what was wrong. I am not computer-savvy enough to know much more than that anyway.
I also have my PM disabled because I would hate to have someone try to contact me and then not be able to log on, so I believe my email is available instead.

Do you mind if I ask if you are all using a broadband connection?

hmm, cable is usually pretty fast. Just wondered if it was a bandwidth problem. I've never had any anomalies in how this site loads (and we have DSL). Oh well, nevermind.

Apparently this forum shares its server with several others, and when their traffic happens to be heavy, the response time is SLOW for everyone. Sometimes refreshing the site or rebooting helps. Sometimes it reminds me to run my spyware program and clear all the junk from the computer. If you don't already have the AdAware program (its a free download) I highly recommend it.
And zingqueen, I had the same problem as you describe- where I couldn't log in. I tried all the same things-- clicking the "cookie refresh" link, shutting it down and rebooting, clearing the cookies from my computer. I finally found the solution-- when ever I sent a brief email to Carolyn sharing my exasperation, it somehow miraculously fixed itself right after I sent my email (then prompting a "never mind", "oops", or "sorry to bother you" email to Carolyn from me.)

| Well, guys, I copied all of your comments and sent them to tech support. Hopefully this will persuade them to find a solution to the most common issues. I will bug them again when I get back. I appreciate your patience and support ---

I had log in problems (using IE 6) until I did the following:
1) Left dbl-click on the "Privacy Report" icon on the right of the IE status bar (on the bottom of the frame, near the "Internet" world icon.
2) Examined the "blocked Website" list that came up. Admissions Advice was on it.
3) Right-clicked on the Admissions Advice entry and selected "Always accept cookies from this site" from the pop-up menu. The site still lists as "blocked"; the menu shows it otherwise.
Haven't had problems since. Not sure why the site was included on this list on my PC.

Descartes,
Mmmm...thank you for that -- I wonder if there is some automatic blocking feature built into the Wowbb software? This is a problem that keeps coming up repeatedly, and I have contacted the company many times to no avail. I think I will copy your post and send it to them to see what they say (probably not much if past exchanges are an indication.)

| Looking a little further, I examined another site that was similarly blocked and it reported the blocking was due to the browser's inability to find the site's privacy policy. I would guess my browser's security settings require that such a policy be made available to the browser according to some expected protocol and, if not, the site's cookies get blocked. My security settings are the default "medium", so this might be happening to others, as well. Last edited on Wed Jan 31st, 2007 01:36 pm by Descartes

| Thanks, that helps a lot. At least now I can ask the right question. Unfortunately, I feel like I am now kind of "stuck" with this software as changing would require losing all of the discussions so far, at least as far as I have been able to understand.

Whee! I finally can log in, thanks to Descarte's sleuthing. I was evidently having the same trouble with IE blocking cookies from this site.
I'll see you over in the "introductions" section!

It is also possible that anyone with an AOL browser or using Firefox with security settings enabled may have problems. If you are using AOL, close down the browser and open the generic browser on your computer. It may be MSIE.
I have no trouble with this site using MSIE, however I usually use Firefox. To post replies, I must enable Java script for this site only. I usually have it disabled, so when I click on a link, it can't open any items that require Java unless I select that option, to prevent possible spyware from loading onto the computer. This site doesn't do that, so it's safe to enable Java scripting.

| I am still unable to get a message/alert when a reply has posted to a thread in which I've posted, even though I have that option enabled. Any ideas??
