I saw in a Boston Globe article that apps to Tulane doubled this year. I also read that, as a result, the admit rate was only 22% (lower than Emory!).
Tulane is on my daughter's college list, and, per her HS's Naviance, she would have had a chance of acceptance (although a stretch).
Now I'm guessing that we should consider this a super reach.
It makes me wonder if the same will hold true for some of the other schools on her list?!

I suspect that Tulane is a special case in that it really suffered badly (especially financially as students were evacuated, and they couldn't pay all faculty salaries) as a result of Hurricane Katrina, and applications were probably well down the past two years as a result.

| Per the graph accompanying the article, applications from Massachusetts for 2008 (983 apps) represented a more than 50% increase from pre-Katrina levels (just over 600 apps).

I saw reports yesterday that students are being accepted off the waitlist at Tulane. Let's wait and see what happens with "waitlist season".

Tulane offered some kind of free applications this year. I know a kid who applied, but had no intention of going if he got into his other schools.

Ahhh...that is probably a big part of the reason for the increase in applications. My son expressed some initial interest, and got a lot of mailings (and a hat!) from Tulane, but even if there is a free application, he isn't going to apply. He'd never seriously consider going there.

The free applications at Tulane are not new to this year - they've been doing their "priority applications" for some time. My daughter applied using that two years ago.

I know two kids who applied and were admitted to Tulane this year, but neither is going because the financial aid package wasn't strong enough. I understand that it was the first choice school for both of them, but a $12,000-$14,000 difference in net costs was enough to sink it as an option. (At least one of these students had scores/gpa/extracurriculars that were well above Tulane's 75th percentile last year, so it wasn't a case of a student they didn't especially want.)

Many schools, including Tulane, offer a streamlined "priority application", and have for many years (older s received them in 2003). Tulane's marketing strategies have really been strong this year. I cannot fault them in the least-- it was successful for us, and though Tulane was originally s's safe school, he is excited and looking forward to attending this coming fall. At the recent Honors weekend, they reported that the average SAT score (based on the old 1600) for admitted freshmen went up from 1246 last yr to 1391 this year. I suspect, if many of the RD kids that were put on the WL due to the # of admissions they had already offered, this number might even have been higher. This year's incoming class is expected to be 1600-1700, much higher than the anticipated 1400, and in line with the pre-Katrina numbers.
Tulane sends many invitations to local events, on-campus events, as well as opportunities to "chat" online with the President every month or so. They send follow-up emails and informational mailings. While some may consider it overkill, it had a lot of useful information. At events we attended, the local rep consistently recognized DS and called him by name. Whatever they are doing , they are doing it right! They should keep it up! Acceptance rate this year was about 24-25%, well below previous years 44% !
