I just got a phone call from my sister (a junior), who got back from her NACAC college fair this afternoon. She was pretty excited, and she’s trying to put a list together. At this stage it’s obviously tentative, but she’s trying to figure out which colleges she wants/needs to visit.
SAT: 680 CR, 650 W, 590 M
GPA: 3.88 freshman year, 2.88 sophomore year
This year’s grades are still up in the air, but she had a 2.5 (ouch!) first semester. She overloaded on IB/AP classes this year, and it’s killing her.
Extracurriculars: orchestra, journalism internship @ Charlotte Observer, library volunteer, yearbook staff, newspaper staff
Wants: Fairly small college with good English/writing programs and school spirit. A scenic campus is a nice plus.
Tentative list: Meredith, Lees-McRrae, UNC-Asheville, App State, Warren Wilson, Hollins
If anyone could comment on these or suggest any others, I’d be very appreciative. Last edited on Sun Mar 30th, 2008 06:44 pm by warblers

Warblers, does she want to stay in the southeast, or is she open to other areas?
I would recommend she check out Goucher (a little reachy if her grades don't come up), McDaniel College, Catawba College, Guilford, and Washington College (MD) for starters. Kind of a different kind of place, but she might also take a look at Sewannee in Tn. The grade crash will hurt, but she will still have many options. Is there a reason for the grades going down?

Good to see you warblers!
I am not too familiar with writing programs, but my son has a friend who is in the graduate Creative Writing program at Hollins, and he LOVES it.

Thanks for the suggestions. She's open to colleges outside the SE, and Kenyon was her dream school until she realistically evaluated her chances. The main reason for the grade crash is her underestimation of her schedule. She's taking 5 IBs and 2 APs this year, which I warned her was a very tough courseload. Her grades this semester are looking a bit better, and next year will be an easier schedule, although I don't know how much that will help.
mominva- Thanks for the input. She really likes what she's seen of Hollins, so it's good to hear about their writing program.

| Washington College also has a nice little writing program, and should be within range with her grades. Goucher's writing program focuses more on creative non-fiction, but the English department is very strong overall. Check closely about Hollins - it is my understanding that their creative writing program has lost some faculty in recent years, and is not quite what it once was, but this is third-hand information so may be incorrect.
