Do any of these schools have a mall, a couple of restaurants, and/or movie theatre within easy reach either by walking, public transit, or school supplied shuttle transportation? List of schools in question: Wooster, Denison, Otterbein, Ohio Wesleyan, Earlham, and Wittenberg
Thanks.

| Northeastmom, I'll ask my son about Earlham when he gets back from lunch. I didn't visit Earlham with him, my dad did. I do know that Richmond, the town near Earlham, isn't a thing of beauty--at least in my S's opinion.

Northeastmom,
I can only comment on Earlham, but as the students said when I visited, "One goes to Earlham in spite of Richmond lol". It was mentioned a couple of times that one should not wear Earlham gear into town, though I did not see a lot of college gear on campus in general. There are a ton of things to do on campus, and most students do stay on campus on weekends.
I think that their local coffeeshop in Richmond has gone out of buisness, sadly, but maybe someone can correct me if that is wrong, but I feel like I read it in the student paper.
We did manage to eat at IHop, Red Lobster, Cracker Barrell, and a really cool pizza place called Pizza King, while we were there though. They also have a Starbucks (complete with a drive through) and just opened Chipotle in Feb, which everyone on campus seemed very excited about. There is also a couple of grocery stores, I think one very close to campus, and a 2.50 movie theatre, and a multiplex ( I think 11 screens) in town.

| defyingravity, Thanks for this information. Are any of these places within walking distance, or is there a college shuttle or other transportation to access these places without a car? Thanks. Last edited on Wed Mar 26th, 2008 09:11 pm by Northeastmom

| I think that they run a shuttle on the weekends and everyone on campus is allowed to have cars, so even if you personally do not have a car, there is a high probability that you will know someone who does.

| Oberlin is in a small town. There is a one screen movie theater and a few restaurants right close to campus. The mall is about 25 minutes away. There is a regular county bus that runs several times every day. It goes to the mall in Elyria. It also goes to the airport. From the airport you can get the train to downtown Cleveland. The cost of both is very reasonable.

Try Wittenberg. As I recall, it is right in the center of town. I just can't recall the NAME of the town.
As for Earlham, when my daughter did the two-week summer program there, she said she quickly got tired of no place to eat but chain restaurants and no place to shop but Wall Mart. This was three years ago -- at that time there was no STarbucks in town, just a small restaurant near campus that SERVED STarbucks and proudly touted it on their billboard, so maybe Richmond's moved up in the world. . There is a grocery store on one side of campus, a video store within walking distance, and a small cafe called the Sunshine Cafe and a KFC up the block, but that is about it in terms of walking distance at Earlham. I think you *might* also be able to walk to the CVS and the small K-mart that are about a mile and a half to two miles from campus, but it'd be a schlep in the winter. They do run shuttles on the weekend, but all of the chains and the (very small) mall are on the opposite end of town. Dayton is a 45 minute drive. Indianapolis about an hour. During the two week summer program, a number of students in the program headed out to Indianapolis on Saturday.
I think for smaller schools in small towns without much to offer (like Richmond and Beloit), it's a good idea to think about what larger cities are within shooting distance. Beloit's downtown is by no means an urban oasis, but there are places to walk to from campus (restaurants, coffee shop, grocery stores), and Madison and Chicago are both within easy driving distance (and there is regular public transportation to them every day). There's decent movie theaters, a mall, Best Buy, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Pier One, etc. up in Janesville, about 15 minutes away as well. So, my advice is to consider not just what's in walking distance, but also ease of getting to some real diversions.

Northeastmom, I got this from a fellow Carl mom whose older daughter is at Wooster. She asked me forward it to you.
"Wooster, Ohio, is a small Amish community with a charmingly antique part of town very close to campus. This area is easily walkable (minutes away) and offers limited shopping, a few interesting mom-and-pop eateries, a McDonalds, and a very nice pharmacy. The newer part of Wooster is maybe two miles from campus, and the college does offer shuttles there. This rather utilitarian strip-mall area would never be mistaken for Rodeo Drive or Fifth Avenue; it is similar to a billion other blandly generic shopping areas to be found from sea to shining sea, serving up a variety of chain restaurants, fast-food joints, a Wal Mart, a Best Buy, a Dollar Store, a movie theater, hotels, gas stations, etc. Basic needs. Our daughter (who LOVES the school) is a sophomore without a car and has never used the shuttle; as many of her fellow students do have cars, she’s had no problem whatsoever getting to and from the shopping district as needed. In short, while Wooster, Ohio is not where she would likely choose to spend the rest of her life, our daughter has found it to be more than satisfactory in meeting her needs during her years there. Most importantly, she loves the school itself, where something cool is always going on, where the professors are involved, interesting, and interested, where she is being academically challenged, and where she has made a close network of bright, like-minded friends of a lifetime. What more could one ask of the college experience?"

| Ohio Wesleyan is in Delaware, Ohio which is a suburb of Columbus. I know that it is 20 minutes from a major mall and I'm pretty sure they have a bus that goes there. Delaware is pretty built up and has tons of restaurants that I can see. I do not know the proximity of places to campus.

Wittenberg is in Springfield, but not close to much in walking distance that I noticed during our visit to that school. It is in a nice area of an industrial town and I think a car would be advisable for getting around.
Otterbein is a northern suburb of Columbus and around the campus was a number of shops and stores. I did not survey them, but since there is a fair number of commuters attending Otterbein, getting a ride should not be a big problem I would speculate.
Denison is on the edge of the twon of Granville and the basics are available. Shopping and theatres are mostly in Newark just East of Granville or in COlumbus which is 20 miles west. Many of the students have cars (when my D1 attended they were quite a few expensive cars in the student's parking areas).
Wooster (which D3 and I visited on tuesday/wed this week) has a few fast food, drug store, pizza shops in walking distance, but as stated by others, the strip mall north of campus is within a mile, but outside of a grocery store and Pizza Hut not much else.
downtown has some shops, couple of ok restaurants, great hungarian bakery/coffee shop, but too far to walk for students. definitely need a car to really get around, but there are Amish in the area so an occasionally buggy will be trotting along past the college.
