hey everyone. thanks jocelyndad for the insight. here are just some updates:
allegheny invited me for "trustee scholars weekend" which is rather exciting and i am wanting to go really bad. i think i made it clear to my parents that as of right now, from my accepted schools, allegheny is my number one. anyway, the weekends that the scholars weekend are ... not compatible with my family's schedule. i cannot tell you how hectic that dumb family schedule is but we'll see. if i do go, i will post a visit report. etown also invited me for a scholars reception. if i cannot make it to allegheny's trustee weekend, i am sure i could go up in a few months for a one on one visit.
other news... one application has been giving me so much stress. ramapo college of new jersey. the one college my mom and dad are rooting for. so much stress. i sent in my application... november 13th... and then january 2nd, they sent out a little postcard telling me all the things i was missing : application fee, sat scores, and 1st marking period grades. so i called my admission counselor.. very nice man, told me that he only received my october sat scores... and not the ones previous to that.... i thought if you send your sat scores, your old scores follow you as well. so my admission officer told me to make a copy of my sat scores and send them. fine. my application fee, which was cashed, i had to send a copy of the cancelled check. okay. 1st marking period grades... got them sent out.
so now, i check out their status page... they only received my 1st marking period grades?! ugh. i tried calling my admission counselor today but he was out of the office. i sent out my 1st marking period grades, copy of cancelled check, and copy of sat scores...at the same time, same envelope! ugh.
at least hartwick received everything, rather quickly.
hope all is well with everyone!

oneinvincible, I think those problems with that one school should be red flags to you. To say that you never mailed in your check when you have a cancelled check tells me they are very disorganized. And, yes, you cannot only send the last set of SAT scores, so something is weird there. They all go together. There is no hiding scores! Unless you do what my D did. She submitted all her scores to the colleges a month before she took the SAT2 German with Listening in case she wasn't happy with that score. It was extra-not needed for admissions. She was happy with the score so we had to pay for them to be delivered again, but if she wasn't they would have been none the wiser.
I think you may want to investigate that one school a little deeper. You don't want to end up at a place that loses stuff.

Ramapo, is a state school in NJ. It is supposed to be a good, solid school and is in a very nice suburban area. I have driven past it, and the grounds are beautiful. The freshman retention rate is 88%, but the 4 year graduation rate is only 45%, and the 5 year jumps to 63%. I think that graduation rates are very important to look at. I would not judge the school by an unorganized admissions office. I know that is hard to do. We found one of those in private college 2 years ago. Our experience was similar, with a missing hs transcript, etc.
Jocelyndad, great post! I completely agree with it. You must know that for most students keeping a merit scholarship is a bit of a gamble. Getting a 3.0 as a colllege freshman can be hard for many students.

As someone who managed a receivables organization in a prior life, I can assure you that updating your 'paid' status is not quite as simple as you might wish. Admissions has to send the copy to the Bursar/Treasurer, who then has to investigate what happened to your funds, which were mostly likely credited to someone else's account. The Bursar has to investigate, so both accounts can be adjusted at the same time. And, since the app fee is the same for thousands of students, the Bursar just can't search in the data base for all checks in the amount of, say, $50.00.
Hang in there!

this has been such a grueling week and finally something amazing happened: accepted at Ramapo! I loved Ramapo when I visited and after all the stress with missing information, I can finally breath. I am so excited!
anyway, the grueling week... midterms. i was so upset with myself for getting a 76 on my us history 2 midterm. eek. there was 260people, places, battles to match for 100 questions. can someone please let me zoom to graduation? i was not feeling too well physically and the entire test was this huge puzzle to me. i am disappointed with myself... my midterms this year were extremely hard. ap lit was comprised on three parts: the comprehension test where you must accurately match the right interpretation to the passage, vocab, and fill in the blanks that ask specific questions one must actually read the book to answer. then, you have your timed in-class essay to get ready for ap test. and finally, the take home essay where you must analytically critique the book, without using state of being verbs. fun. my math midterm was oh so much fun as well. this marking period, i think i got all A's again except in math.. that's a B. ugh. the midterm grades though are just ugh, killing me.
ugh, this post is getting negative and today was/is a good day!!! i am also visiting allegheny the weekend before my birthday for their trustee scholar event! i am very excited about that. i definately use the word "excited" too much. haha.
so i hope all is well with everyone! this was another good saturday!

Congrats on the acceptance, Oneinvincible! I am also interested to know what you think about Allegheny as that was a school my D was looking at initially.

| Once, you have done very well. Now, the hard part begins: making your final choice. But, lucky you, you don't have any BAD choices, just lots of great ones.

I was wondering what the outcome was with Ramapo. I love the grounds at that school! I am sure that your parents like the instate tuition too. It looks like a LAC to me. I have not toured yet, but we will. In our hs, kids think that they must go to Rutgers and all of our other state schools are not good. I disagree, but I am not crazy with our graduation rates. Congratulations on your acceptance to Ramapo.
Which do you prefer between Ramapo and Stockton and why? Did you look at Montclair as well? We might visit all of them.

thanks outwest, scoop, carolyn, and northeastmom. being accepted into seven schools (!!!) is absolutely crazy. some of my classmates only applied to one to three schools. i guess i am a special case. haha. anyway, at this point i will be trying to visit my favorites and i am still awaiting : hartwick, college of wooster, and drew. but i am trying to do pro's/con's. it is pretty hard.
northeastmom- my parents LOVE the in-state tuition at Ramapo. My mom and I visited Ramapo in May (?) and I could not believe how beautiful the campus was. It is known as "New Jersey's Public Liberal Arts College," and they accept less than 48% of their applicants. i feel as though all new jersey public schools are getting more and more competitive with admissions, especially The College of New Jersey which has grew much in popularity at my school.
i definately prefer ramapo over stockton, but this is my own personal opinion. ramapo college is much more like a private school than a public school in the regards that 90 percent of their students live on campus. sure, a good number go home on the weekend but however a group does stay. the rural area and environment is very beautiful, peaceful. there is a train and a bus that takes you to hoboken, and to the city. many activities are planned. however, in the winter, brutal. the academics are ramapo are rigorous, well-structured, and their literature department is solid. they have first year seminars, plentiful internships, and much more one on one that one would think would be offered at a public school. i liked the feel of the campus body, accepting and friendly. also, in north jersey, ramapo does have a strong reputation in those in the know, who do not just go crazy for the scarlet knights that is rutgers.
i did not apply to rutgers because i would rather not have to go on a crowded shuttle bus each day to go to class and be surrounded by thousands upon thousands of people. i do not like lecture classes which a 100 or so people file in and you can barely pay attention. ugh. rutgers does have a solid reputation however i felt my learning styles is better suited in a much smaller environment. since i am thriving in my 120 person class high school, a smaller environment seems natural to pick.
i applied to richard stockton because i liked that it was down the shore, their literature department is solid from the looks of it. however, it is very much a suitcase school... only 30 percent of students even live on the campus. i do not like how the entire campus is basically one gigantic building. also, in north jersey, no one has ever heard of richard stockton which is a shame. it really is a solid school for marine biology, theatre, and i would say overall liberal arts. stockton is known as a "party" school and attracts a less academic crowd than ramapo, it is more comparable i think to rowan as an overlap school? stockton is a very good value... tuition/room/board/fees --- a little over 18,000 if i am not mistaken. its acceptance rate, i believe, is 53 percent.
both richard stockton and ramapo have immediate decisions days if you have a 1100 or higher, you can be evaluated in one single day. i missed it by 60 points but all worked out.
i did not apply to montclair because it is 10-20 minutes away from my house, i dislike the campus, a little overcrowded, and i feel as though at other nj publics, there were stronger english departments. montclair has a very solid theatre and education programs. it is a bargain. many of my classmates either really loved montclair or didn't.
another new jersey public i was considering applying was rowan. rowan actually had a better major for me, Writing Arts, but for some odd reason, I decided to apply to Stockton. I think there is more to do in Stockton, which is near Atlantic City, than Glassboro where Rowan is. A handful of my classmates applied to Rowan.
the school everyone at my high school is talking about is TCNJ. Their average sat score is a 1300 (cr/math) and it is near Trenton? I visited but did not care for the campus. It was voted one of the most "beautiful campuses" by PR but I did not see it. Most of the buildings are very pretty however compare it to a Kenyon or to a Bucknell, it is definately not as beautiful. They have really risen in popularity over the years, and many top students flock there due to its affordability and quality education. It is sort of known as a public ivy. The freshman dorms were disgusting however the library was very impressive.
Wow, long post. Hope all is well with everyone!

| Very nice review of some of the NJ publics! keep in mind that the graduation rate from Ramapo is only 45% in 4 years with a decent freshman retention rate of 88%. The 4 year graduation rate does bother me. As far as the winters, I think that it tends to be a bit more snowy and cold there than where you live, but it isn't going to be that huge of a difference (it is a nothing like Buffalo NY, Oswego, or where a lot of those SUNYs are located). There will be a slight difference.

Congratulations on your acceptances! I'm enjoying following your progress and your comeback from what was initially a major disappointment. You've turned it around very nicely. 7 acceptances is an accomplishment to be proud of. I look foward to hearing where you end up.

!!!
very random but much enjoyable email i received from ursinus tonight. i was chosen to be a candidate for the ursinus merit scholarship. here is a little excerpt from the email:
"As a finalist in our scholarship program you are among the top group of students who have applied to Ursinus College, selected from an applicant pool of over 6,000. Ursinus College Scholars are eligible for up to $18,000 per year in scholarship funding, an award you would receive all four years you attend the college."
i will have to interview with a member of the faculty on their scholarship day which is like in three weeks, i think. ursinus is only two hours away from where i live. i was really shocked by the email though. i did not think at all i would be considered for a scholarship at ursinus. lol. i wonder if everyone who is nominated will at least get a small scholarship. eh. whatever, i am excited to be chosen and that is a feat in itself. lol.
hope all is well with everyone.

| My guess would be that everyone who interviews is going to at least get some merit scholarship. I have no knowledge, it is just a guess. If you are interested in this school, you should go! Good luck!

thanks mominva and hummingbird!
i just got a letter from The College of Wooster awarding me 13,250/yr scholarship!
So far, here is how my admissions journey has gone:
Allegheny College - Accepted/$12,500 yr.
College of Wooster - Accepted/$13,250 yr.
Ursinus College - Accepted/Finalist in Merit Competition
Elizabethtown College - Accepted/$12,500 yr.
Knox College - Accepted/$14,000 yr.
Ramapo College of New Jersey- Accepted
The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey - Accepted
Washington College - Accepted/$11,500 yr.
Drew University - Deferred into RD
Hartwick - Applied RD
... so i have two schools to hear from now : hartwick and drew, both around my birthday. i am now in the 3rd marking period, excited about tennis season starting soon! today, i finished drew university's writing scholarship, washington college's writing scholarship, and some other scholarships. i finished the fafsa and profile. now, i just need to DECIDE and visit some of my schools. I have joined all my accepted groups in facebook (lol)... i like COW's the best, the kids are the nicest and I can really see going to school with that bunch. Knox's group is a quirky, interesting bunch. Washington's is very sports-oriented. Ramapo College's is pretty nice. Anyway, that is where I am at. Hope all is well!

Oh wow, congratulations Onceinvincible! Looks like you are going to have a very difficult decision to make very soon.
Oncenvincible, just curious, did you end up retaking the SATs, or did you just forget about it?
