Many of us know that in addition to helping us all here for free, Carolyn works with very low income students. An easy way for us to "pay it forward" is to send her our old college search and prep materials. The students need college guides and gently used SAT & ACT study guides. Course catalogues and view books are also welcome.

These students are an amazing group of kids at a very special school. All of them share being very low income, and some of them come from the kind of family circumstances that land many kids on the street or in jail. Instead, these students end up at top colleges, due to their intelligence, incredible motivation, and getting a break. They are the kind of kids who move a community forward.

We can also help them by making a tax deductible contribution to the school, earmarked for Carolyn's use in the counselling department. The students need things that our kids can take for granted, like a little help paying for applications or sending test scores.

PM Carolyn for the addresses for sending books or making a contribution.

Thanks!

Elsa, You are too sweet to mention my kids. But, thank you. These ARE some really special kids, and they really would appreciate any guidebooks, admissions advice books, essay books, test prep books, etc. that you no longer want cluttering up your shelves. And, they play it forward too - I was touched when several of my seniors brought me the gently used books I'd given them last year when they were done with them so that I could pass them along to juniors and sophomores.

If shipping books to California isn't your thing, before you throw those books away (and all those catalogs as well!) consider finding a school or local organization serving low income kids, and donating them there. Thanks!

I forgot about essay advice books. I read them. S read nothing. He just wrote. It will be great to send them to kids who will actually use them.

Lovely idea - I gave away last years, but I will have more.

Shipping book rate is quite reasonable!

Good point!  IF the package contains nothing but books, ask to send it media mail.  I recently sent a box with 7 books from Connecticut to Montana for just over 3 dollars.  It takes a little longer but it's worth it.

Yes, I have donated college materials to the local public HS in our area and they were thrilled to have the materials to share with their students.  It is always a plus if we can avoid landfills and give materials to folks who will actually use them.  My S also didn't use the materials we bought him, but I have passed them on to folks whom I hope will.

My daughter decided to sign up for a Saturday SAT review class.  I gave her the option of studying at home since it means missing her cherished Saturday art class.  She didn't want to do the Tues/Thurs class and she knew she would procrastinate without a scheduled class.  Therefore, I am sure the three books I bought will be good as new and ready for someone else to use:)

My kids LOVE essay books, and they also love any test prep books any and all guidebooks. These are all kids who will be the first in their families to attend college and a fair share have parents who don't speak English. So, they are pretty much on their own (well, they DO have me ;)) when it comes to figuring out where to apply, how to apply, and how to get financial aid. Thanks to those who have contacted me by PM. You have earned brownie points in heaven for helping me and my kids out.
