Well, I just heard from S that he's back at his dorm. I was hugely relieved, since he left here this morning for an 8 a.m. flight (that was delayed) dressed in two short-sleeved t-shirts (his idea of "layers"), khakis, sneakers, and a thin fleece pullover. He assured me he had a "thicker fleece" and a scarf in his luggage that he'd pull on when he landed--in -2 degree tempertures. No hat, no gloves, no thick socks, no long underwear. Ouch.
I bought him a sheepskin hat (a la Elmer Fudd) for Christmas, but I shipped it directly to school. Ouch.
So I'm happy that he arrived sans frostbite damage to any of his extremities, and he says that there's "more snow than I've ever seen" and asked me to mail his boots that he forgot. Ah, yes, life is back to normal.
Hope you all had a lovely holiday and your kids all have wonderful breaks and safe journeys back to their schools!

Our holiday is still going on. School resumes next week. I'm glad your son arrived safely, snow and all. I'm not looking forward to going from the bustle of activity, teen humor and messes to a very quiet household again.

WestrnMom, it's really hard; it made me think about Carolyn saying that her D leaving for sophomore year was harder than freshman. We've had such a great time with him home that it's very hard to have him leave again--it's a bit surreal, actually.
Before I start crying, I'll remind myself of how happy he sounded on the phone. He'd met another Carl who works in tech support (in a different area) and they talked all the way to Northfield (on the St. Olaf bus, since it had room and he'd missed his reserved place on a Carleton bus). And he got off the phone quickly because he and a friend were going to eat.

I am tracking my D via internet flight checks.
Leg 1 landed on time from Dulles to Vegas.
We had to change her route and buy leg 2 to go from Vegas to LAX instead of continuing on the ticket to San Diego.
It is currently in the air, on time, and I hope the luggage arrives as well. I did stick around to see that it was tagged to LAX.
She will be joining a group heading to India for intersession. That flight takes off 6 hours after she lands at LAX.
Her visit home was a 10 day blur of shopping, showering, the obligatory family holiday visits, friends in and out, packing. There was very little down time.

mominva, she will have a bit of down time on the flight to India.
Whereabouts will she be? And what will she be doing and for how long?
A friend's son did a stint in India when he was at Davidson. She was very nervous at the time, but he loved it. I lived there as a child; it's an amazing country.

Limner,
After her looong day(>32 hours) of flying, my D will be in a 3 week intersession course 'Negotiating Religious Diversity in India'. The group will be starting and ending in Delhi with visits to many temples, mosques and churches in Delhi, Sarnath, Bodhgaya, Rajgv, Nalanda and Agra.
The course fulfills an upper level Theology requirement; the only prerequisite was the World Religions course she just finished (in her first semester).
PS- I spoke to my daughter. She and her bag have reunited.
You have to love this connected generation- a friend from school, home in LA and was on his way to LAX to have lunch with my D while she waits for her next flight.

That India trip sounds amazing!
D called, and has arrived safely at Carleton. She drove up, spending last night with a friend in Kansas. I joke about her collecting friends along I-35. We did make sure her car was in good order, had snow tires, had various car emergency supplies, including a blanket. And thanked the weather gods for having two clear days of weather between Texas and Minnesota.

| limner & ffscout ~ D also arrived around 3 pm and was back in the saddle running around visiting friends. Already had dinner plans. I didn't hear a peep about the weather. She says it feels strange to have classes start tomorrow when she doesn't have a Thursday class! Her last 2 terms, comps, grad school news, and graduation await! Limner & FFscout:
Our D2 had arrived in Northfield on Jan 1 to overnight with her Professor before leaving this am for a J-term (4 weeks) trip to China and Japan.
Heck it was only 2 degrees this am, The St Olaf bus is warm, even for a Carleton student.
Now that D2 left NJ, the cold winds and low temps are here with us tonight and Brr Tomorrow.
Now that our children have spent 3 semesters in Northfield, they qualify for North Country Survivors.

MaizeBlue, ffscout, and JDad, glad to hear that your kids are safely ensconced amid the snowdrifts in Northfield.
Well, okay, JDad's D was safely ensconced for a night there. What a cool sounding trip--how long will JD2 be gone? And St. Olaf is second in my affections only to Carleton right now, JDad.
MaizeBlue, graduation, yikes. My guess is that this time has flown, if our experience with the first term is any indication.
mominva, keep us posted. That sounds like an amazing trip, and I'd love to hear your D's impressions.
ffscout, doesn't your D head for Mastricht this spring?

They landed in Tokyo to take a flight to Shanghai and will go later to Beijing, after 2 weeks in China it is back to Japan (Tokyo) then Nara/Kyoto/Osaka, back to Tokyo in all 2 weeks in Japan and then back to Minnesota.
20 students in all, all with either Chinese or Japanese language classes they have been in a Asian Conversation group for a class the past three semesters. This trip will qualify as a 4th class.

Son is on the road. Last I heard he was on top of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge with an ETA of 3:30 or so in North Carolina. Hopefully there will be no delays, because he needs to get there in time to go the bookstore and pick up his textbook for his Winter Term calculus class that starts tomorrow and 8:30 -- and finish the three sections due for the first class!
He had perfect timing, of course. It's been a very mild winter here until today, and now he gets to zip back to the (relative) warmth of the Carolinas!

As JDad no doubt knows, we parents with long graduated kids may also track the travel paths of our kids to and from holidays (not to mention down/up their life paths). Our son was "home" only for a few days over Christmas, but working much of the time online writing chapters for the forthcoming baseball annual. It was nice to see him then, but I think we'll actually see more of him next week when we head to Chicago to celebrate his birthday.
Our D, still here til late this afternoon, is in the final throes of putting together her business school applications. The process of MBA aps can be strung out because most of the schools have multiple rounds of application reviews and decisions. D put in two aps on round 1 (R1). and is also putting in 2 (maybe 3) in R2 as well as two aps to dual degree programs associated with two of the business schools she's applied to.
So we are reviewing essays, looking over the details of online aps for errors of commission or omission, and subsidizing the application costs. But the intensity of concern is not nearly as great as it was when she first applied to college. After all, she has a job, and is making a career in design without an MBA; but if she gets into the right kind of program this will boost her career considerably on the strategic and process aspects of ecological design, rather than just turning out creative products.

It's just too funny reading these posts about so many of our kids in Northfield, Minnesota!
Yes, my daughter will be in Maastricht next term (spring). From the way she was talking, she may do more gallivanting around Europe than participating in classes. Apparently, the tuition includes a Eurailpass.
MaizeBlue, I can't believe your daughter is so close to graduation - congratulations! I've already got a list of "things I want to do/buy when we're through paying tuition", which should come in 5 1/2 years.
Safe journeys to all our students!

| I drive my daughter back to school on Sunday, and I'm definitely experiencing mixed feelings. On one hand, we both are feeling that it's TIME!!! We've had a wonderful time together, but we're both chafing a bit to get back to our individual routines. On the other hand, she has some tests at the hospital tomorrow which we're anticipating will finally provide the answers to some vexing medical issues she's dealt with for the past 1 1/2 years. While my head is telling me that's good news, my heart is aching a bit at the thought of sending her back to school without her mommy to take care of her. Of course, all I have to do is envision her reaction to that last phrase, and I can see the eye roll and the reminder...it's TIME!!!

My daughter doesn't go back until the 13th. She has been keeping an eye on the weather - she ended up leaving her car in the school parking lot and is worried about having to dig it out of the snow when she gets back.
It has been wonderful having her home. My husband, son, and I have also had these past two weeks off, and my son's girlfriend and band-mates have been out of time, so there has been lots of family time. We even squeezed in a quickie trip to LA, where I met and was interviewed by Jay Leno.
But, Limner, last night I woke in the middle of the night with the sudden realization that the family time is quickly winding down. While my daughter still has another week home, next week the rest of us will be back to our regular, busy routines. And, of course, next year, BOTH kids will only be temporary visitors over the holidays. Humph. I think I am going to sign off and go get everyone rounded up for some fun tonight. That should keep the sadness at bay a while longer.

Oh Carolyn, Will you be on Jay Leno's show??? Even *I* will stay up that late to see you!!!
DS went back to school yesterday. He was originally on a Continental flight from her to school via Newark. His flight got delayed so late that he would have missed his connection. SO...he went up to the gate and dealt with it. They put him on a flight via Reagan in DC of US Air (at no charge). He arrived back at school about 1 1/2 later than his flight said...must have been delayed. I wonder if he got his luggage moved from Continental to US Air?
DD leaves on Sunday. She has been here for almost a month and I'm going to miss her when she goes. Tomorrow we'll go have pedicures together after I'm done with work.
We won't have both kids home at the same time again until next December...and then only for a week like this year. They are growing up. We get to see DS more often as he is closer. We hope to get to CA sometime before December to see DD at school....maybe this summer.

If they use my interview, it will be on the Jaywalking with Leno segment on January 8th. My kids were both mortified when I said hello to Mr. Leno and he called me over to chat, but he seemed like a geniunely nice guy. You'll know it's me if my interview is used because Jay was confused about what a "college counselor" does.

Carolyn, that's cool! I'll set the Tivo to record that episode in case you're on.
When you first said Jay interviewed you, I thought maybe he had a college-aged kid and was interviewing you to see if he wanted to hire you as their counselor !
